Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Longyearbyen — Gateway to the High Arctic
Arrive in Longyearbyen (78°13′N), the world’s northernmost settlement with more than 1,000 residents. Transfer from Svalbard Airport to the pier, where your expedition vessel awaits. Meet your expedition team — polar historians, marine biologists, and Arctic guides. Safety briefing and welcome dinner as you sail out of Isfjorden. First sunset (or midnight sun, depending on season) over the Arctic Ocean. Overnight aboard ship.

Day 2: Northwest Spitsbergen — Kongsfjorden & Ny-Ålesund
Sail into Kongsfjorden, one of Svalbard’s most spectacular fjords, flanked by dramatic mountain peaks and glaciers. Zodiac cruise to Ny-Ålesund (78°55′N), the world’s northernmost year-round civilian settlement and a historic polar research base. Visit the anchoring mast used by Roald Amundsen and Umberto Nobile for their airship expeditions to the North Pole (1926, 1928). Afternoon wildlife watch for Arctic foxes, Svalbard reindeer, and the first polar bear sightings of the expedition.

Day 3: Liefdefjorden — Monaco Glacier & Polar Bear Territory
Cruise into Liefdefjorden, renowned as prime polar bear territory. Approach the face of the 5km-wide Monaco Glacier — an immense wall of blue ice that calves house-sized chunks into the sea with a sound like thunder. Zodiac cruise among brash ice, watching for bearded seals and the bears that hunt them. If conditions permit, make a shore landing at a walrus haul-out, observing these massive pinnipeds from a safe, respectful distance.

Day 4: Hinlopen Strait — Alkefjellet Bird Cliffs
Navigate Hinlopen Strait between Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet. Approach the towering basalt cliffs of Alkefjellet — home to an estimated 60,000 pairs of Brünnich’s guillemots, plus kittiwakes, glaucous gulls, and the Arctic’s fastest bird, the peregrine falcon. The cliffs stretch for kilometers, and the noise, smell, and spectacle of this seabird metropolis is overwhelming. Keep watch for polar bears patrolling the base of the cliffs for fallen chicks.

Day 5: Nordaustlandet — Polar Desert & Ice Cap
Explore the northeastern reaches of Svalbard, a landscape of austere beauty dominated by the Austfonna ice cap — one of Europe’s largest glaciers at 8,100 km². Walk on the polar desert tundra, where only the hardiest Arctic plants survive the extreme conditions. Visit the remains of historic trapping stations from the 19th century. With 24-hour daylight (April–August), the expedition team can maximize wildlife viewing — a bear sighting at midnight sun is an unforgettable experience.

Day 6: Barentsøya & Edgeøya — Walrus & Reindeer Islands
Sail south along the east coast of Spitsbergen to the twin islands of Barentsøya and Edgeøya. These remote islands support large populations of Svalbard reindeer and are important denning areas for polar bears. Land at a known walrus haul-out, where dozens of these 1.5-tonne animals pile together on the beach. Afternoon cruise along the edge of the polar ice cap — if lucky, spot polar bears hunting seals on the sea ice. The midnight sun casts a golden glow on the endless white landscape.

Day 7: Hornsund — Glacier Fronts & Beluga Whales
Enter Hornsund, Svalbard’s southernmost fjord, ringed by some of the archipelago’s most dramatic peaks — sharp, jagged spires rising directly from the sea. Zodiac cruise along active glacier fronts, watching for calving events and the beluga whales that frequent these waters in summer. Visit a historic Polish research station (if staffed) and learn about ongoing Arctic science. Final expedition dinner with a recap of the voyage’s wildlife sightings.

Day 8: Return to Longyearbyen — Departure
Arrive back in Longyearbyen in the early morning. Farewell breakfast before disembarkation. Transfer to the airport for your flight south, carrying memories of polar bears, glaciers, and the raw beauty of the high Arctic.
