Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive São Tomé — The Chocolate Island

Land at São Tomé International Airport. Transfer to the luxurious Omali Lodge, a boutique hotel set in tropical gardens minutes from the airport. Afternoon orientation: São Tomé city tour. Visit the São Sebastião Fortress (now the National Museum) built by the Portuguese in 1575. Walk through the colonial quarter with its pastel-colored buildings and the bustling central market where merchants sell tropical fruits, vanilla, and local crafts. Welcome dinner featuring calulu (traditional fish stew with okra, eggplant, and palm oil) at a seafront restaurant. Overnight at Omali Lodge.

Day 2: Ôbo National Park — UNESCO Rainforest

Full day in Ôbo National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. This pristine rainforest covers nearly one-third of São Tomé Island and contains some of the highest levels of endemism on Earth. Hike to the Lagoa Amélia — a mystical crater lake surrounded by giant tree ferns and orchids. The forest is alive with endemic birds: São Tomé giant sunbird, São Tomé paradise flycatcher, and the critically endangered São Tomé fiscal. Visit the Botanical Garden to see the island’s unique flora. Afternoon: Pico Cão Grande viewpoint — this 663m volcanic plug rising vertically from the rainforest is one of Africa’s most dramatic landmarks. Overnight at Omali Lodge.

Day 3: Cocoa & Coffee Plantations — Island History

Journey into São Tomé’s agricultural heartland. Visit a historic roça (plantation) — the island was once the world’s largest cocoa producer. Tour a working organic cocoa plantation: from tree to pod to fermented bean to the finished chocolate. Taste single-origin São Tomé chocolate, prized by artisanal chocolatiers worldwide. Visit a coffee plantation producing gourmet Arabica. Afternoon: explore the northern coast — visit the Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth) blowhole where Atlantic waves crash through a natural rock arch, and the picturesque fishing village of Neves. Lunch featuring santola (land crab), a São Tomé delicacy. Overnight at Mucumbli Lodge, a seaside eco-resort.

Day 4: Southern Beaches & Turtle Conservation

Drive south along the dramatic coastal road to Porto Alegre, São Tomé’s southernmost point. Cross to Ilhéu das Rolas — a tiny island bisected by the Equator. Stand with one foot in each hemisphere at the Equator monument! Swim and snorkel in crystal-clear waters teeming with tropical fish. Afternoon: visit a sea turtle conservation project. Between November and February, leatherback, green, and hawksbill turtles nest on São Tomé’s pristine beaches. Learn about conservation efforts from local biologists. Overnight at beachfront bungalow in Porto Alegre.

Day 5: Depart São Tomé

Morning beach time. Return to São Tomé city. Visit the artisan market for chocolate, vanilla, coffee, and local crafts. Transfer to airport. Até logo — see you soon!
