Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Port Moresby

Touch down at Jacksons International Airport. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation: visit the National Museum & Art Gallery to understand PNG’s 800+ languages and extraordinary cultural diversity. Evening: welcome dinner featuring mumu — traditional earth-oven roast of pork, sweet potato, and taro. Overnight in Port Moresby.

Day 2: Fly to Mount Hagen — Highlands Gateway

Morning flight over the Owen Stanley Range to Mount Hagen, capital of the Western Highlands. The aerial view reveals razor-backed ridges and hidden valleys where isolated tribes lived unknown to the outside world until the 1930s. Afternoon: visit the Mount Hagen Market — one of the largest in the country — where Huli Wigmen, Melpa warriors, and highland traders gather in a vibrant display of traditional dress even on ordinary days. Overnight in Mount Hagen.

Days 3-4: Mount Hagen Cultural Show

Two full days at the Mount Hagen Show — the grandest sing-sing (cultural gathering) in PNG. Over 70 tribes from across the Highlands gather in an explosion of color and rhythm. Watch Huli Wigmen with their elaborate human-hair wigs decorated with paradise bird feathers, Asaro Mudmen emerge from the mist in eerie clay masks, and Chimbu warriors with skeleton body paint perform ancient war dances. This is the world’s most spectacular tribal gathering — a living museum of human culture. VIP seating, guided cultural interpretation, and opportunities to meet tribal elders between performances. Overnights in Mount Hagen.

Day 5: Paiya Village — Intimate Sing-Sing

Journey to Paiya Village for an intimate, private sing-sing with 12 local groups. Unlike the stadium spectacle, this is a close-up, personal experience. Participate in a traditional mumu feast prepared in an underground oven — pork, kaukau (sweet potato), taro, and greens, slow-cooked with hot stones for hours. Learn the art of bilum (string bag) weaving from village women. Overnight in Mount Hagen.

Day 6: Fly to Bougainville — Untouched Paradise

Flight to Buka, Bougainville — an autonomous region of incredible beauty that’s been closed to tourism for decades and is now slowly opening. Visit the Bougainville Cultural Centre to learn about the island’s unique matrilineal society and recent history. Afternoon: snorkel in pristine coral reefs teeming with marine life — Bougainville’s waters are among the world’s most biodiverse. Overnight in Buka.

Day 7: Bougainville — Arawa & Panguna Mine

Full day exploring Bougainville. Visit the abandoned Panguna copper mine — once the world’s largest open-pit mine and the catalyst for the Bougainville conflict. This is a profound journey through contemporary Pacific history. Afternoon: visit traditional Nasioi villages to learn about Bougainville’s independence movement and rich cultural heritage — bamboo panpipe music, tapa cloth making, and storytelling. Overnight in Buka.

Day 8: Bougainville — Island Life & WWII History

Morning visit to Kieta and Arawa town. Explore WWII relics — Admiral Yamamoto’s crashed bomber site and Japanese tunnels. Afternoon: island-hopping by boat to the outer atolls — swim in crystal-clear lagoons, meet fishing communities, and experience the Pacific at its most authentic. Farewell dinner of fresh reef fish and tropical fruits. Overnight in Buka.

Day 9: Return to Port Moresby — Depart

Flight back to Port Moresby. Visit the Koki Fish Market and Parliament House — a striking building designed in the shape of a Sepik haus tambaran (spirit house). Transfer to international airport. Lukim yu bihain — see you later, PNG!
