Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Libreville — Gateway to Central Africa
Land at Léon Mba International Airport. Transfer to your hotel along Libreville’s palm-fringed coastline. Afternoon orientation tour: visit the National Museum of Arts and Traditions to understand Gabon’s rich cultural heritage — Fang reliquary figures, Punu white-faced masks, and Kota brass-covered guardian figures that inspired Picasso. Stroll the seafront boulevard. Welcome dinner featuring grilled capitaine (Nile perch) and manioc at a beachfront restaurant. Overnight in Libreville.
Day 2: Loango National Park — Africa’s Last Eden
Morning flight or 4×4 transfer to Loango National Park (depending on season). Loango is famously where “hippos surf in the Atlantic” — one of the only places on Earth where elephants, gorillas, and buffalo roam beaches and savannas that meet the ocean. Afternoon: guided forest walk searching for forest elephants, red river hogs, sitatunga antelope, and over 400 bird species. Visit Akaka camp on the Fernan Vaz Lagoon for a chance to see western lowland gorillas in the wild. Sunset boat safari on the lagoon — watch elephants emerge from the forest to feed on the shoreline as the sun sets over the Atlantic. Overnight in Loango eco-lodge.
Day 3: Gorilla Tracking & Lagoon Exploration
Full day in Loango. Dawn gorilla trekking expedition (gorilla habituation experience — groups of 4 max, permit required). Track western lowland gorillas with experienced BaKota trackers through the coastal forest. Unlike Uganda/Rwanda, this is a true wilderness experience — no habituated groups, just pure tracking. Afternoon: kayak through the labyrinth of lagoons and mangrove channels, spotting crocodiles, manatees, and rare birds. Evening: campfire dinner with local BaKota storytelling about forest spirits and gorilla legends. Overnight in Loango.
Day 4: Pongara National Park — Turtles & Beaches
Return to Libreville, then boat across the Gabon Estuary to Pongara National Park — a pristine coastal wilderness where leatherback turtles nest (November-February). Walk endless white-sand beaches backed by untouched rainforest. Visit the Pointe Denis lighthouse. If in turtle season: guided night patrol to witness leatherback turtles (the world’s largest, up to 700kg) laying eggs — a deeply moving experience. Afternoon at leisure swimming in the warm Atlantic waters. Farewell seafood dinner — oysters, prawns, and fresh fish at a beachfront camp. Overnight in Pongara beach bungalow.
Day 5: Depart Libreville
Morning beach walk. Boat back to Libreville. Visit the artisan market for traditional masks and carvings. Transfer to airport. Au revoir, Gabon!
