Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Fly to Ende — Arrive Flores

Fly from Bali to Ende (1h30m). Ende is a port city on Flores’ south coast, famous as the place where Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, was exiled by the Dutch (1934-1938). The house where he lived — now the Sukarno Museum — is where he reportedly drafted the Pancasila (the five principles that became Indonesia’s national ideology). Afternoon: drive to Moni, a cool hill village 1.5 hours from Ende at the foot of Mount Kelimutu. Overnight in Moni.

Day 2: Kelimutu Tri-Colored Lakes & Drive to Bajawa

Pre-dawn departure to Kelimutu National Park. The three crater lakes of Kelimutu are one of Indonesia’s most extraordinary natural phenomena — each a different color (currently turquoise, dark green, and reddish-black) due to volcanic gases and dissolved minerals. The colors have changed multiple times over the decades — records since 1915 document shifts between combinations of blue, white, red, brown, green, and chocolate — and geochemists still debate the exact mechanisms. The Lio people believe the lakes house the souls of the dead, color-coded by the deceased’s moral standing. Watch sunrise illuminate the craters as mist swirls over the water.

After the lakes, begin the scenic drive west across Flores (8 hours to Bajawa), through landscapes of volcanic peaks, bamboo forests, and traditional Ngada villages with their distinctive megalithic monuments and thatched clan houses. Overnight in Bajawa.

Day 3: Bajawa to Labuan Bajo — Limanest Village & Spider-Web Rice Fields

Morning: visit Bena traditional village, the most famous Ngada settlement. The village is laid out in two long rows of traditional houses facing each other across a stone plaza, with ngadhu (male ancestral shrines — parasol-shaped on carved wooden poles) and bhaga (female ancestral shrines — miniature houses) marking the clan groups. Animal horns and jawbones from sacrificial ceremonies adorn the shrines. Morning drive west, stopping at the spider-web rice fields of Cancar (lingko) and the village of Ruteng. Arrive Labuan Bajo by evening. Overnight in Labuan Bajo.

Day 4: Komodo National Park — Dragons & Pink Beach

Full-day boat excursion to Komodo Island and Pink Beach. Morning: Komodo Island trek with rangers to see the world’s largest lizards (up to 3m, 70 kg) in their natural habitat. Komodo dragons are living relics of the Pleistocene, apex predators with venom glands (discovered 2009) and bacteria-laden saliva that together cause rapid shock, blood loss, and sepsis in prey. Walk through dry savanna with lontar palms and tamarind trees — East African-looking landscape in the middle of Indonesia. Afternoon: snorkel at Pink Beach, one of only seven in the world, with coral gardens in crystal-clear water. Return to Labuan Bajo. Overnight in Labuan Bajo.

Day 5: Depart Labuan Bajo

Morning at leisure for last views of the harbor and its phinisi schooners. Transfer to Komodo Airport (LBJ) for departure.
