Day 1: Labuan Bajo to Sebayur — Setting Sail

Board your private phinisi — a traditional Indonesian two-masted sailing vessel, handcrafted from ironwood and teak by Bugis boat builders of Sulawesi using techniques passed down for centuries. Modern luxury phinisis retain the traditional rigging (seven sails) but add air-conditioned cabins with en-suite bathrooms, a sundeck with loungers, and a crew of 8-10 including a private chef. Welcome drink (fresh young coconut with rum, if desired) and safety briefing. Set sail from Labuan Bajo harbor — the crew raises the sails, the engine cuts, and you’re under wind power, gliding past volcanic islands. First stop: Sebayur Island for sunset — a tiny island with a single resort, excellent snorkeling, and a view of the Komodo archipelago that stretches to the horizon. Dinner on board: the chef prepares a feast of Indonesian and Western cuisine — grilled lobster, beef rendang (slow-cooked coconut curry), gado-gado (vegetable salad with peanut sauce), and fresh tropical fruit. Overnight on board, anchored off Sebayur, under the stars — the Milky Way is bright this far from city lights.

Day 2: Padar, Pink Beach & Dragons

Sunrise coffee on deck as the phinisi sails toward Padar Island. Trek to the Padar viewpoint in the cool morning light — the sunrise colors over the three beaches are arguably even more beautiful than sunset. Continue to Pink Beach for snorkeling among pristine coral and photos of the rosy sand. Lunch on board: sashimi from fish caught by the crew that morning.

Afternoon: Komodo Island or Rinca Island dragon trek with a park ranger. The experience of walking through dry savanna with Komodo dragons — the world’s largest lizards, 3m, 70kg, venomous bite — is humbling and thrilling in equal measure. The rangers’ knowledge extends beyond dragons to the entire ecosystem: explain how the dragons share the islands with Timor deer (their primary prey), wild boar, and water buffalo, and how the marine park protects the entire food web.

Sunset: sail to a secluded anchorage. The crew sets up a beach bonfire on an uninhabited island — grilled fresh fish, cold Bintang beer, and the sound of waves lapping at an empty white sand beach. The phinisi is visible offshore, its sails furled, lanterns glowing on deck — the most romantic image in Indonesia. Overnight on board in a secluded bay.

Day 3: Manta Ray Ballet & Crystal Rock

Morning: sail to Manta Point. The crew’s experienced spotter identifies mantas from the deck, and you slip into the water to float with these majestic creatures. Manta rays (Mobula alfredi — reef mantas, and occasionally the giant oceanic mantas, Mobula birostris, with 7m wingspans) visit cleaning stations where small wrasse pick parasites from their skin. The mantas circle continuously — they may pass within arm’s reach, curious and unafraid. It is an experience that changes how you see the ocean.

Snorkel at Crystal Rock and Castle Rock — two submerged pinnacles in the northern park that are among Asia’s finest dive/snorkel sites. The currents here bring nutrient-rich water, attracting massive schools of fish, reef sharks, turtles, and occasionally dolphins. The coral cover is extraordinary — Komodo’s location at the meeting of the Flores Sea and Indian Ocean creates upwellings that support exceptional marine biodiversity.

Afternoon: explore the less-visited northern islands — Gili Lawa Darat and Gili Lawa Laut, with their dramatic volcanic landscapes and beaches accessible only by boat. The phinisi’s shallow draft allows anchoring in bays inaccessible to larger vessels.

Final evening: Kalong Island bat exodus at sunset. The phinisi positions perfectly for the spectacle — thousands of flying foxes streaming from the mangroves, silhouetted against the setting sun, with the sails of the phinisi in the foreground. Farewell dinner on board: the chef’s magnum opus — a multi-course Indonesian rijsttafel (rice table) with dishes from across the archipelago. Overnight on board near Kalong Island.

Day 4: Sunrise & Return

Final sunrise from the deck of the phinisi — coffee, fresh fruit, and the quiet of the Komodo archipelago in morning light. Sail back to Labuan Bajo. Disembark and transfer to Komodo Airport, carrying memories of dragons, mantas, and the romance of sailing a phinisi through one of the world’s last wild archipelagos.
