Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Accra — Akwaaba!

Land at Kotoka International Airport. Your guide welcomes you with “Akwaaba!” — the quintessential Ghanaian greeting. Transfer to your hotel. Evening: dinner at a restaurant in the vibrant Osu district (Accra’s Oxford Street), with its mix of restaurants, bars, and street food. Overnight in Accra.

Day 2: Accra — History & Culture

Full day Accra. Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park (the father of Pan-Africanism and Ghana’s independence), Independence Square with the Black Star Gate, and the National Museum for Ghana’s pre-colonial and colonial history. Afternoon: Makola Market (Accra’s chaotic, colorful central market) and Jamestown (the historic fishing district with colonial architecture and street art). Overnight in Accra.

Day 3: Cape Coast — Slave Castles

Drive to Cape Coast. Morning: Cape Coast Castle (UNESCO). The emotional heart of the tour — the dungeons where enslaved people were held, the “Door of No Return” facing the Atlantic, and the museum documenting the transatlantic slave trade. Afternoon: Kakum National Park canopy walkway — 40m above the rainforest floor on suspended bridges. Overnight at Lemon Beach Resort.

Day 4: Elmina & Coastal Villages

Morning: Elmina Castle (1482), the oldest European building in sub-Saharan Africa. Afternoon: explore the fishing villages along the coast — watch fishermen haul in their daily catch, visit a traditional shrine, and meet the community. Evening: traditional drumming and dance performance. Overnight at Lemon Beach Resort.

Day 5: Kumasi — The Ashanti Kingdom

Drive to Kumasi. Visit Manhyia Palace Museum, seat of the Ashanti Kingdom. See the replica Golden Stool, Ashanti gold weights, and learn about one of Africa’s most powerful pre-colonial empires. Afternoon: National Cultural Center and Prempeh II Jubilee Museum for royal regalia and kente cloth. Overnight in Kumasi.

Day 6: Ashanti Craft Villages

Visit the traditional craft villages: Ahwiaa (woodcarving), Ntonso (adinkra cloth stamping — each symbol a proverb), and Bonwire (the original kente weaving village). Participate in hands-on workshops: stamp your own adinkra cloth and try weaving kente on a traditional loom. Overnight in Kumasi.

Day 7: Volta Region — Wli Waterfalls

Drive east to the Volta Region, Ghana’s most scenic area. Afternoon: hike to Wli Waterfalls — Ghana’s highest (80m), located in a lush forested valley near the Togo border. The hike (45 minutes) passes through cocoa farms and crosses the river several times. Swim in the pool beneath the falls. Overnight in Hohoe.

Day 8: Volta — Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary & Return to Accra

Morning: Tafi Atome Monkey Sanctuary, a community-run conservation project protecting a sacred troop of Mona monkeys. The monkeys are considered sacred messengers and are semi-habituated — you can feed them bananas by hand in the forest. Afternoon: drive back to Accra, crossing the Volta River at the Adomi Bridge. Overnight in Accra.

Day 9: Accra — Arts, Crafts & Farewell

Morning: visit the Artists Alliance Gallery (contemporary Ghanaian art), the Centre for National Culture (craft market for final souvenirs — kente, adinkra, beads, wood carvings), and the W.E.B. Du Bois Centre (the resting place of the American Pan-Africanist who spent his final years in Ghana). Afternoon: visit a casket workshop in Teshie — Ghana is famous for its “fantasy coffins,” custom-made coffins shaped like anything the deceased loved in life (fish for fishermen, airplanes for pilots, cocoa pods for farmers). These are functional art pieces and are collected by museums worldwide. Farewell dinner with live highlife music — Ghana’s signature sound, blending traditional rhythms with jazz and funk. Overnight in Accra.
