Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Managua — Granada
Airport pickup. Direct transfer to Granada, Nicaragua’s colonial jewel (1 hour). Evening: walk through the Parque Central, past the yellow Cathedral and the colorful colonial houses. Welcome dinner. Overnight in Granada.
Day 2: Granada & Las Isletas
Morning: horse-drawn carriage tour through Granada’s cobblestone streets. Visit the San Francisco Convent and Museum (one of Central America’s best collections of pre-Columbian statuary), the chocolate museum (learn to make traditional Nicaraguan drinking chocolate), and the fortress church of La Merced (climb the bell tower for the best view of Granada). Afternoon: boat tour of Las Isletas — 365 tiny islands in Lake Nicaragua, formed by an ancient volcanic eruption. Overnight in Granada.
Day 3: Masaya Volcano & Laguna de Apoyo
Morning: Masaya Volcano — peer into the glowing lava lake of the Santiago crater (the “Mouth of Hell” to Spanish conquistadors). Visit the Masaya handicraft market for hammocks, pottery, and leather goods. Afternoon: swim in the warm, mineral-rich waters of Laguna de Apoyo (200m deep crater lake) with stunning views from the Catarina overlook. Overnight in Granada.
Day 4: Ometepe Island
Ferry across Lake Nicaragua to Ometepe Island. The twin volcanoes (Concepcion and Maderas) rising from the lake create one of the world’s most dramatic landscapes. Visit petroglyphs (ancient indigenous carvings), Ojo de Agua natural spring pool, and a cacao farm. Overnight on Ometepe.
Day 5: San Juan del Sur
Ferry back to mainland. Drive to San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua’s premier Pacific beach town. Afternoon: surfing, swimming, or horseback riding on the beach. Evening: fresh seafood at a beachfront restaurant with sunset views over the Pacific. Overnight in San Juan del Sur.
Day 6: Departure
