Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Olbia — Costa Smeralda & Gallura
Arrive Olbia Airport. Morning: drive along the Costa Smeralda — Porto Cervo, the Piazzetta with its designer boutiques, and the Stella Maris church with a Mater Dolorosa attributed to El Greco. Visit the Nuraghe La Prisgiona, a remarkably intact Bronze Age fortress with the remains of over 90 stone huts preserved around it. Afternoon: Gallura wine tasting at a Vermentino di Gallura DOCG winery. Drive to Palau for hotel check-in. Evening: walk along Palau’s waterfront facing La Maddalena. Overnight in Palau.
Day 2: Castelsardo & Alghero
Morning: drive west along the northern coast. Stop at Castelsardo, a spectacular medieval village built on a rocky promontory directly above the sea — the Doria Castle (1102) commands panoramic views of the Gulf of Asinara. The town is famous for its basket-weaving tradition, and the Museo dell’Intreccio Mediterraneo documents this craft. Continue west to Alghero. Afternoon: walking tour of Alghero’s Catalan old town — the 16th-century sea walls, cobblestone lanes, and the Torre di Sulis (a prison tower where political prisoners were held). Sample coral jewelry in artisan shops — the Coral Coast (Riviera del Corallo) around Alghero produces some of the Mediterranean’s finest red coral. Overnight in Alghero.
Day 3: Bosa & Oristano — Medieval Sardinia
Morning: drive south to Bosa, one of Italy’s borghi più belli — the pastel waterfront houses, old tanneries along the river, and the Malaspina Castle dominating the hilltop. The town’s artistic ceramics tradition produces distinctive white-glazed pieces with cobalt blue patterns. Lunch at a riverside osteria. Afternoon: continue to Oristano, capital of the medieval Giudicato of Arborea — an independent Sardinian kingdom that resisted both Pisan and Aragonese control until 1420. Visit the Cathedral, the Tower of Mariano II, and the Antiquarium Arborense. Drive south to Cagliari. Overnight in Cagliari.
Day 4: Cagliari — The Castello & Archaeological Treasures
Full day in Sardinia’s capital. Morning: Cagliari’s Castello district — the 14th-century Pisan ramparts, the Cathedral of Santa Maria, the Royal Palace (former residence of Savoy viceroys), and the Torre dell’Elefante with its small stone elephant carving (1307). Visit the Museo Archeologico Nazionale for the incomparable Nuragic bronzes — bronze figurines over 3,000 years old depicting warriors, priests, mothers, and animals, offering a window into a unique European Bronze Age civilization. Afternoon: the Roman amphitheater, Poetto beach, and the flamingo-filled Molentargius lagoons. Farewell dinner at a Michelin-recommended restaurant in the Marina district. Overnight in Cagliari.
Day 5: Departure
Morning visit to the San Benedetto market — Sardinia’s largest food market — for last-minute purchases of bottarga (cured grey mullet roe, “Sardinian caviar”), carasau bread, and pecorino sardo. Transfer to Cagliari Airport.
