Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Olbia — Transfer to Cala Gonone

Land at Olbia Airport and transfer south to Cala Gonone, a seaside village wedged between the limestone cliffs of the Supramonte mountains and the Tyrrhenian Sea. Your hotel has views of the Gulf of Orosei — a 40km stretch of wild coastline with hidden coves accessible only by boat or on foot. Welcome briefing and dinner featuring culurgiones (Sardinian stuffed pasta with potato, pecorino, and mint). Overnight in Cala Gonone.

Day 2: Cala Luna Sea Cave Trek

The iconic Sardinian hike. Morning boat to Cala Luna, one of the Mediterranean’s most beautiful beaches — fine white sand bookended by limestone cliffs, with sea caves at the northern end (including the Grotta del Bue Marino, where monk seals once bred). After exploring the beach and swimming, begin the coastal trail south to Cala Sisine — 8km of dramatic single-track path clinging to the cliffs, with turquoise water below and juniper-scented Mediterranean scrub above. Arrive at Cala Sisine around mid-afternoon for a well-earned swim. Boat back to Cala Gonone. Dinner at a pizzeria overlooking the harbor. Overnight in Cala Gonone.

Day 3: Supramonte Mountains & Gorropu Canyon

Today’s challenge: the Gorropu Gorge, one of Europe’s deepest canyons. Drive into the Supramonte massif — a 35,000-hectare limestone wilderness where Sardinian deer and golden eagles still roam. Hike down into the Flumineddu river valley and into the gorge itself — walls up to 500m high narrowing to just 4m in places. The boulder-strewn floor requires scrambling over limestone blocks polished by millennia of flash floods. Your guide identifies endemic botanical species: the Sardinian peony, the Aquilegia nuragica (found nowhere else on Earth). Return hike is strenuous — approximately 6 hours total. Evening: well-deserved feast at an agriturismo in Dorgali. Overnight in Cala Gonone.

Day 4: Cala Cartoe & Cala Osalla Beach Trails

A gentler day. Hike from Cala Gonone north along the coast to Cala Cartoe, a crescent of white sand backed by a freshwater lagoon where pink flamingos sometimes visit. Continue to Cala Osalla and Cala Biriola — hidden coves accessible only on foot, each more pristine than the last. The trail passes through an abandoned shepherd’s settlement, with stone huts (pinnetas) still standing. Picnic lunch on the beach between swims. Afternoon option: sea kayaking along the coast to explore sea caves inaccessible on foot. Overnight in Cala Gonone.

Day 5: Baunei & Pedra Longa

Drive south to the Baunei plateau — one of Sardinia’s most dramatic drives, winding through a lunar landscape of white limestone with the sea 400m directly below. Visit Pedra Longa, a 128m limestone needle rising from the sea — a legendary rock climbing destination. Hike the Selvaggio Blu (Wild Blue) trail segment, considered Italy’s toughest trek — the full 5-day route requires climbing and abseiling, but today’s section is a moderate coastal walk with staggering views. Afternoon: descend to Santa Maria Navarrese for a swim at the beach and exploration of the thousand-year-old olive tree in the church piazza. Overnight in Baunei area.

Day 6: Boat to the Hidden Coves

No hiking today — your legs deserve a rest, but the Gulf of Orosei’s best coves are only accessible from the sea. Full-day small boat excursion exploring the coast: Cala Goloritzè (UNESCO Natural Monument, with its 143m limestone spire), Cala Mariolu (tiny pebble cove with water so clear boats seem to float on air), Cala dei Gabbiani, and the Grotta del Fico — a massive sea cave system with underground lakes and stalactite formations. Swimming, snorkeling, and picnic on board. The limestone cliffs rise directly from crystal-clear water, creating scenery comparable to the Thai islands or the Croatian coast — but with a fraction of the crowds. Overnight in Baunei area.

Day 7: Nuragic Villages & Farewell

Morning: visit the Nuragic village of Tiscali — a remarkable site hidden inside a collapsed cave/sinkhole, where a Bronze Age village was built inside the mountain, invisible from outside. The 4-hour round-trip trek follows an ancient trail through holm oak forest to reach this secret village (500m elevation gain). The surprise at the summit — walking into a vast natural amphitheater with stone hut foundations scattered among the trees — is unforgettable. Afternoon: return to the coast for a farewell swim at Cala Fuili. Farewell dinner with porceddu (roast suckling pig, Sardinia’s signature dish) and mirto liqueur. Overnight in Cala Gonone.

Day 8: Departure

Morning transfer to Olbia Airport. Option for a final swim at Pittulongu beach near the airport if time allows.
