Day 1: Arrive to San Marino — The Serene Republic
Arrive at Bologna or Rimini airport. Transfer 1.5 hours to San Marino, the world’s oldest surviving republic (founded 301 AD) and one of its smallest (61 km²). The country sits atop Mount Titano (739m), a three-peaked limestone ridge visible from the Adriatic coast. Its historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage site, a perfectly preserved medieval city of stone ramparts, narrow alleys, and spectacular views. Check into your hotel inside the walls. Evening: walk the Passo delle Streghe (Witches’ Passage), a narrow covered walkway between the three towers that feels straight out of a fantasy novel — especially at dusk when the valley below fills with mist. Day 2: San Marino’s Three Towers & Historic Centre
The three towers on Mount Titano’s peaks are San Marino’s national symbol (they appear on the flag and coat of arms). Morning: climb to the First Tower (Guaita, 11th century), the oldest and most dramatic — it served as a prison until 1970. Cross the battlement walkway to the Second Tower (Cesta, 13th century), which houses the Museum of Ancient Arms with over 1,500 weapons spanning from the Bronze Age to World War I. Continue to the Third Tower (Montale, 14th century), the smallest and most remote — used as a watchtower and signal post. Afternoon: explore the Basilica of San Marino (1838), built on the site of a 4th-century church and housing the relics of Saint Marinus, the stonecutter who founded the republic. Visit the Palazzo Pubblico (1894), the neo-Gothic town hall where the two Captains Regent — San Marino’s rotating heads of state, elected every 6 months — govern. Day 3: Romagna Countryside & Food Trail
Descend into the Emilia-Romagna countryside surrounding San Marino. Visit a traditional piadina maker — the flatbread that’s the region’s soul food, griddled and filled with squacquerone cheese and prosciutto. Continue to a family-run vineyard producing Sangiovese di Romagna. Afternoon: San Leo, a dramatic fortress-village perched on a vertical rock spire 15km from San Marino. The castle (built 1441) was the prison of Count Cagliostro, the infamous alchemist and Freemason, who died in its dungeon in 1795. The views from the ramparts sweep from the Apennines to the Adriatic. Overnight in San Marino.
Day 4: San Marino Morning & Depart
Visit the Stamp and Coin Museum — San Marino’s postage stamps and coins are highly collectible and a significant source of national revenue. Walk the city walls one last time. Transfer to Bologna or Rimini airport.
