Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Rapa Nui — Ahu Tahai Sunset

Fly from Santiago to the world’s most remote inhabited island. Evening sunset at Ahu Tahai — your first moai silhouettes. Overnight in Hanga Roa.

Day 2: Rano Raraku & Tongariki — The Moai Heartland

The quarry of Rano Raraku where 400 moai remain in various stages of completion. Walk among standing, fallen, and half-carved giants. Afternoon: Ahu Tongariki’s 15 moai against the Pacific. Overnight in Hanga Roa.

Day 3: Anakena, Ahu Akivi & Puna Pau

White sand beach with moai at Anakena. The sea-facing Ahu Akivi (equinox alignment). Puna Pau quarry where the 12-ton red topknots (pukao) were carved from a single crater of red scoria. Overnight in Hanga Roa.

Day 4: North Coast — Ahu Te Pito Kura & Papa Vaka

Explore the less-visited north coast. Ahu Te Pito Kura, where the largest moai ever successfully transported (Paro, 10m, 82 tons) lies toppled beside a perfectly spherical magnetic stone said to be the “navel of the world.” Papa Vaka petroglyphs: enormous carvings of tuna, turtles, canoes, and the god MakeMake covering a 12m lava flow. Continue to Ovahe Beach, a hidden cove with pink sand. Afternoon: hike to the Poike Peninsula, the oldest part of the island (3 million years), where three moai face the sunrise. Overnight in Hanga Roa.

Day 5: Orongo & Rano Kau — The Birdman Ceremony

Full morning at Orongo ceremonial village on the rim of Rano Kau crater. Study the 54 stone houses and hundreds of birdman petroglyphs. Walk the crater rim trail for epic views. Afternoon: visit the Ana Kai Tangata cave with its red-and-white paintings and explore the dramatic sea cliffs of the south coast. Overnight in Hanga Roa.

Day 6: Hiking, Snorkeling & Rapa Nui Culture

Morning hike on the Terevaka Trail to Maunga Terevaka (507m), the island’s highest point — 360° views of the entire island surrounded by empty ocean. Afternoon: snorkeling at Hanga Roa bay — the crystal-clear water offers views of a submerged moai (placed for a film in the 1990s). Evening: traditional Rapa Nui umu (earth oven) feast with dance performance. Overnight in Hanga Roa.
