Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Cayenne — France in South America
Arrive at Félix Éboué Airport in Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana — an overseas department of France, making it technically part of the European Union in South America. The humid tropical air, French spoken with a Caribbean lilt, and Creole architecture immediately signal you’re somewhere unique. Check into your hotel. Afternoon orientation: walk through Cayenne’s Place des Palmistes, the palm-lined central square, and visit the Cayenne Market for exotic Amazonian fruits — cupuaçu, bacuri, and fresh açaí. Visit the Musée Départemental Alexandre-Franconie to understand the region’s complex history: indigenous peoples, European colonization, African slavery, and the notorious penal colony era. Welcome dinner featuring Guianese Creole cuisine: blaff de poisson (fish poached in court-bouillon), Colombo (curry influenced by Indian indentured laborers), and comtesse (a local cake). Overnight in Cayenne.
Day 2: Guiana Space Centre — Europe’s Gateway to Space
Full-day visit to the Centre Spatial Guyanais (CSG) in Kourou, Europe’s primary spaceport. This is where Ariane rockets launch, where the James Webb Space Telescope began its journey to L2, and where Europe’s satellites reach orbit. The tour visits the Ariane 5 and Ariane 6 launch complexes — standing beneath a launch pad built for rockets taller than the Statue of Liberty is an unforgettable experience. Visit the Jupiter Control Centre, the Operations Centre from which launches are commanded. See the Vega and Soyuz launch pads (French Guiana is the only spaceport on Earth operating three different rocket families). The visitor center’s museum tells the story of European space exploration. Note: launch dates are available online — travelers can sometimes arrange visits coinciding with actual launches! Afternoon: explore Kourou town and the Iles du Salut viewpoint. Overnight in Kourou.
Day 3: Iles du Salut — Devil’s Island & Papillon’s Legacy
Morning catamaran to the Iles du Salut (Salvation Islands), the most infamous penal colony in history. The three islands — Île Royale, Île Saint-Joseph, and the legendary Île du Diable (Devil’s Island) — held France’s most dangerous prisoners from 1852 to 1953. Walk through Île Royale’s restored prison buildings: the convicts’ dormitory, the solitary confinement cells, the chapel, and the hospital. The contrast between the island’s tropical beauty and its brutal history is stark. From the shoreline, you can see Devil’s Island — inaccessible to visitors due to dangerous currents, just as its most famous prisoner, Henri Charrière (Papillon), described. Afternoon: swim at the island’s small beach — the same waters Papillon dreamed of escaping through. Return to Kourou. Evening drive to Sinnamary. Overnight in Sinnamary.
Day 4: Amazon Rainforest — Kaw Marshes & Wildlife
Early morning: drive to the Kaw-Roura Marshes Nature Reserve, French Guiana’s premier wildlife destination. Board a motorized pirogue (traditional dugout canoe) for a full-day exploration of the flooded savannah and mangrove channels. This is one of the best places in South America to see: black caiman (up to 5 meters — you’ll see their eyes glowing red in your guide’s spotlight), scarlet ibis flocks turning the sky crimson at dusk, hoatzin (prehistoric-looking birds with clawed wings as chicks), giant river otters, red howler monkeys calling across the channels, and if incredibly lucky, the rare and elusive giant otter. Lunch on a floating pontoon deep in the marsh. Afternoon: visit a small Amerindian village to learn about traditional Amazonian life. Evening in Cayenne. Overnight in Cayenne.
Day 5: Cacao & The Hmong Community — Amazonian Cultures
Morning: drive to Cacao, a unique village founded by Hmong refugees from Laos in 1977. The Hmong brought their agricultural skills to the Amazon, transforming the jungle into productive farmland. Visit the Sunday morning market (if timing aligns) for Hmong embroidery, tropical vegetables, and Lao-influenced street food. Visit an insect museum displaying the staggering biodiversity of the Guiana Shield. Afternoon: hike in the nearby forest to a secluded waterfall for a swim. Visit the nearby village of Roura to meet with a Kali’na Amerindian community, learning about traditional hunting techniques, cassava processing, and medicinal plants. Evening: farewell dinner at Cayenne’s best Creole restaurant. Overnight in Cayenne.
Day 6: Departure
Morning at leisure: last visit to Cayenne Market for Amazonian handicrafts. Transfer to airport.
