Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Saipan — Gateway to the Marianas
Arrive at Saipan International Airport. The Marianas are where “America’s day begins” — Saipan is on the other side of the International Date Line from the USA mainland, making it the first U.S. soil to see each new day. Transfer to your beachfront resort in Garapan, the main tourist district. Afternoon: orientation walk along the Garapan beach path, lined with flame trees and views of the Philippine Sea. Welcome dinner featuring Chamorro cuisine: kelaguen (citrus-marinated chicken or seafood), red rice seasoned with achote, and titiyas (coconut flatbread). Overnight in Garapan.
Day 2: WWII History — The Battle of Saipan Remembered
Full day tracing the pivotal Battle of Saipan (June-July 1944), one of WWII’s most consequential Pacific battles. Visit American Memorial Park, with its museum and flag circle — the memorial honors the 5,204 Americans who died liberating the Marianas. Continue to Banzai Cliff and Suicide Cliff, the tragic sites where thousands of Japanese civilians and soldiers jumped to their deaths rather than surrender — deeply moving memorials now stand there, including Japanese peace monuments. Visit the Last Command Post, a fortified cave from which Japanese General Saito directed the final defense. Explore the abandoned Japanese jail and tank at Susupe. Lunch at a local restaurant. Afternoon: lighter history — visit the Carmen Safaradai Latte Stone site, with ancient Chamorro latte stones (pillar stones used as house foundations) dating back 1,500 years. Overnight in Garapan.
Day 3: Managaha Island — The Jewel of Saipan
Morning boat ride to Managaha Island, a tiny islet in Saipan’s lagoon. The name means “spirit land” in Chamorro — the islet is sacred in local tradition. Managaha is the quintessential Pacific paradise: a fringe of white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and coral gardens just offshore. Morning: glass-bottom boat tour and snorkeling — the coral bommies here host clownfish, parrotfish, and occasionally sea turtles. Parasailing and jet skiing available. Beach BBQ lunch on the island. Afternoon: relax on the beach or snorkel the protected lagoon. Return to Saipan for sunset at Micro Beach. Overnight in Garapan.
Day 4: The Grotto, Bird Island & Saipan’s Natural Wonders
Morning: visit the Grotto, Saipan’s most spectacular natural attraction — a collapsed limestone cavern opening to the Pacific Ocean, with sunlight streaming through underwater tunnels creating an ethereal blue glow. It’s rated one of the world’s best dive sites, but you can also descend the 112 concrete steps to experience the cavern from above. Continue to Bird Island Lookout for views of the bird sanctuary islet in a sheltered cove. Visit Banzai Cliff from the shore level for a different perspective. Afternoon: drive north to the Forbidden Island overlook, then hike the quiet east coast trail to Laulau Beach. Evening: farewell dinner at a Garapan restaurant, followed by the nightly flame tree festival street market. Overnight in Garapan.
Day 5: Departure
Morning at leisure: last dip in the lagoon. Visit the Garapan Street Market for local crafts — latte stone replicas, woven pandanus items, and Chamorro spice blends. Transfer to airport.
