Itinerary Highlights
Day 1-2: Saipan — WWII History & Managaha Paradise
Arrive Saipan. Two days exploring the capital island: WWII historical sites (Banzai Cliff, Suicide Cliff, Last Command Post, American Memorial Park), Managaha Island day trip with snorkeling and beach BBQ, The Grotto cavern, and Bird Island. Overnight in Garapan (2 nights).
Day 3: Fly to Tinian — The Atomic Island
Short flight to Tinian (15 minutes). This small island played one of WWII’s most consequential roles: the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were loaded onto the Enola Gay and Bockscar here. Visit North Field, the former airbase where Runway Able and Runway Baker still exist — the loading pits for the atomic bombs are preserved as memorials. See the Japanese command bunker from which Admiral Kakuta directed naval operations. Afternoon: explore the House of Taga, a mysterious ancient Chamorro site featuring the largest latte stones ever quarried — one stood 15 feet tall. Visit Taga Beach and Tachogna Beach for swimming. Overnight in Tinian.
Day 4: Tinian’s Hidden Treasures
Morning: visit the Blow Hole, where waves force water through a natural lava tube geyser. Explore Suicide Cliff’s Tinian counterpart, with memorials from both Japanese and American visitors. Visit Chulu Beach, a quiet cove where you may have the entire beach to yourself. Afternoon: explore the abandoned WWII Japanese airfields and bunkers reclaimed by jungle. Evening flight back to Saipan. Overnight in Garapan.
Day 5: Fly to Rota — The Friendly Island
Morning flight to Rota, the southernmost and most traditional of the three main islands. Rota is often called “the Friendly Island” for its warm welcome. Check into your accommodation. Drive the island’s perimeter road: visit Tweksberry Park with its botanical gardens, the As Matmos cliffside hiking trail, and Swimming Hole — a natural rock pool protected from the open ocean. Afternoon: visit the Taga Stone Quarry, where the ancient Chamorros carved latte stones from the limestone bedrock — unfinished stones still lie in situ, offering a rare glimpse into prehistoric construction techniques. Overnight in Rota.
Day 6: Rota’s Natural Wonders
Full day exploring Rota. Visit the Bird Sanctuary at the northern tip for nesting seabirds. Hike to Tonga Cave, a massive limestone cavern used as a WWII hospital. Walk the Songsong Village coastline with its traditional Chamorro canoes. Snorkel at Teteto Beach, where coral gardens begin just meters from shore. Afternoon: visit the Wedding Cake Mountain viewpoint — a layered limestone formation resembling a tiered cake. Farewell dinner with a traditional Chamorro fiesta: roast pig over an open fire, kelaguen, apigigi (cassava and coconut wrapped in banana leaves), and local fruits. Overnight in Rota.
