Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Isle of Man — Douglas Introduction

Arrive and transfer to your Douglas hotel. Afternoon: visit the Manx Museum. Evening: walk the 2-mile Douglas promenade, one of the finest Victorian seafronts in the British Isles, with views across the bay to the Tower of Refuge on Conister Rock. Welcome dinner. Overnight in Douglas.

Day 2: Raad ny Foillan Coastal Path — Douglas to Port Soderick

Begin walking the Raad ny Foillan (Way of the Gull), the 95-mile coastal footpath circling the island. Today’s section: Douglas Head to Port Soderick along dramatic cliffs overlooking the Irish Sea. Look for seals basking on the rocks below and choughs (red-billed crows) wheeling overhead. The walk ends at Port Soderick Glen, a wooded valley opening to a quiet beach. Afternoon: visit the Nautical Museum in Castletown, housed in the 18th-century home of the Quayle family, featuring the Peggy — the world’s oldest surviving yacht (1789). Overnight in Douglas.

Day 3: The Sound, Calf of Man & Cregneash — Island’s Southern Tip

Drive to the island’s southern tip at the Sound, where the Irish Sea divides around the Calf of Man islet. Watch for seals, basking sharks (summer), and seabird colonies. Visit Cregneash, the island’s living history Folk Village — a preserved 19th-century crofting village where Manx Gaelic was spoken into the 20th century. Meet the iconic four-horned Loaghtan sheep, unique to the Isle of Man. Afternoon: walk to the Chasms, dramatic 400-foot-deep fissures in the coastal cliffs. Overnight in Douglas.

Day 4: Tynwald Hill & the West Coast — The Oldest Parliament

Morning: visit Tynwald Hill at St John’s, one of the world’s most remarkable political sites. Since 979 AD, the Manx parliament has gathered here each July 5th (Tynwald Day) to proclaim new laws in both English and Manx Gaelic — an unbroken Viking tradition. Drive the west coast to Peel. Visit Peel Castle and enjoy the best fish and chips on the island. Afternoon: walk to Niarbyl, a rocky outcrop where you can watch the sun sink into the Atlantic. The view of the coastline from here was used in the film “Waking Ned Devine.” Overnight in Douglas.

Day 5: Snaefell Summit & Sulby Glen — The Island’s Heart

Ride the Snaefell Mountain Railway to the summit for the “Seven Kingdoms” view. Descend into Sulby Glen, the island’s most beautiful valley. Walk through the glen’s ancient oak woodland, home to red squirrels. Visit Milntown House, a 16th-century estate with magnificent gardens. Afternoon: free time in Ramsey. Overnight in Douglas.

Day 6: Maughold & the North — Celtic Crosses & Quaker History

Morning: drive to Maughold, the island’s most historic church site, with one of the largest collections of Celtic and Norse carved crosses in the British Isles — over 50 stones dating from the 6th to 12th centuries. Walk the coastal path from Maughold Head to Port Mooar. Visit the Grove House, an 18th-century estate with fascinating Quaker connections. Afternoon: explore the northern plains — the island’s flattest area, dotted with Neolithic burial sites and the curious Balladoole Viking ship burial. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Douglas.
