Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Podgorica — Kotor Welcome
Arrive at Podgorica Airport. Transfer directly to Kotor, the jewel of Montenegro’s Adriatic coast — the drive along the Bay of Kotor (Boka Kotorska), Europe’s southernmost fjord, is a UNESCO-recognized natural wonder. Check into your hotel within the walls of Kotor’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Evening orientation: walk through the medieval streets, past St Tryphon’s Cathedral (1166), and dine in one of the candlelit squares. The stone walls, Venetian architecture, and dramatic mountain backdrop create an atmosphere like nowhere else in Europe. Overnight in Kotor Old Town.
Day 2: Kotor’s Fortress & the Bay of Kotor
Early morning: climb the 1,350 steps of the Kotor Fortress (San Giovanni) — the reward is a breathtaking panorama over the entire bay, with the red-tiled roofs of Kotor far below and the mountains of Lovćen rising behind. The trail passes the Church of Our Lady of Remedy (1518) halfway up. Afternoon: boat cruise on the Bay of Kotor. Stop at Our Lady of the Rocks, the artificial island church built over 500 years by sailors dropping stones and sinking old ships — local tradition says every July 22, boats still bring new stones. Visit Perast, a perfectly preserved Baroque town that was once a powerful maritime republic. Return to Kotor for dinner. Overnight in Kotor Old Town.
Day 3: Lovćen & Cetinje — The Soul of Montenegro
Drive the spectacular Kotor Serpentine road — 25 hairpin turns climbing from sea level to the mountain plateau. Visit Lovćen National Park and climb to the Mausoleum of Petar II Petrović Njegoš at 1,660 meters. Njegoš, Montenegro’s beloved prince-bishop and poet, chose to be buried here atop Mount Lovćen — from the mausoleum’s viewing platform, you can see most of Montenegro and, on a clear day, Italy across the Adriatic. Descend to Cetinje, Montenegro’s historic royal capital, known as the “Valley of Gods.” Visit the Cetinje Monastery (1484), King Nikola’s Palace (now a museum), and the Biljarda, Njegoš’s residence. Lunch in a traditional konoba (tavern). Overnight in Kotor.
Day 4: Durmitor National Park — Black Lake & Tara Canyon
Early morning drive north (3 hours) into Montenegro’s highlands — the landscape transforms from Mediterranean coast to Alpine peaks. Arrive at Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk around the Black Lake (Crno Jezero), a glacial lake at 1,416 meters reflecting the peaks — the lake is actually two connected lakes, which merge in spring when snowmelt raises the water level. Visit the Tara River Canyon, at 1,300 meters the deepest canyon in Europe and second deepest in the world after the Grand Canyon. Walk the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, a concrete arch bridge built in 1940 — at the time the largest of its kind in Europe. Optional: zip-line across the canyon (824 meters). Afternoon: drive to Žabljak, Montenegro’s highest town. Overnight in Žabljak.
Day 5: Ostrog Monastery & Skadar Lake
Drive south via the dramatic Morača Canyon. First stop: Ostrog Monastery, carved into a near-vertical cliff face 900 meters above the Zeta Valley. Founded in the 17th century by Saint Vasilije, this is the most important pilgrimage site in the Balkans — the white monastery appears to float impossibly, defying gravity. The upper monastery houses the saint’s relics, believed to have healing powers. Continue to Skadar Lake National Park, the largest lake in the Balkans, straddling Montenegro and Albania. Boat cruise through the water lily fields — Skadar Lake is one of Europe’s most important bird reserves, home to the rare Dalmatian pelican. Wine tasting at a family vineyard overlooking the lake — Montenegro’s Vranac red and Krstač white wines are the country’s best-kept secrets. Return to Kotor for farewell dinner. Overnight in Kotor.
Day 6: Departure
Morning at leisure in Kotor. Transfer to Podgorica or Dubrovnik airport.
