Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive San Juan — Welcome to the Island of Enchantment
Arrive at Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport. Your guide welcomes you with a refreshing piña colada — invented right here in San Juan! Transfer to your hotel in the Condado district. Evening orientation walk along Ashford Avenue, lined with ocean-view restaurants. Welcome dinner featuring mofongo, the island’s signature plantain dish. Overnight in San Juan Condado.
Day 2: Old San Juan — 500 Years of History
Full day exploring the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old San Juan. Walk the blue cobblestone streets — the blue stones are actually adoquines, slag from Spanish iron furnaces pressed as ballast. Visit Castillo San Felipe del Morro, the 16th-century fortress guarding the bay entrance with six levels of ramparts rising 140 feet above the sea. Continue to Castillo San Cristóbal, the largest Spanish fort in the New World. Lunch at a traditional restaurant on Calle Fortaleza. Afternoon: tour La Fortaleza (Governor’s Mansion — the oldest executive mansion in continuous use in the Americas), San Juan Cathedral (housing Ponce de León’s tomb), and the San José Church (second oldest in the Americas). Evening: sunset walk along Paseo de la Princesa with views of San Juan Bay. Overnight in San Juan Condado.
Day 3: El Yunque Rainforest — The Only Tropical Rainforest in the US
Morning departure to El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System. Drive up the winding road through dwarf forest to Yokahú Observation Tower for panoramic views stretching from the Atlantic to the Caribbean. Hike the Angelito Trail through lush vegetation to a natural swimming hole beneath a waterfall — perfect for a refreshing dip. Visit La Coca Falls, an 85-foot cascade visible right from the road. Afternoon: stop at Luquillo Beach, the famous “kioskos” (food stalls) for authentic Puerto Rican beach food — try alcapurrias, bacalaítos, and fresh coconut water. Overnight in San Juan Condado.
Day 4: Arecibo & Camuy — Karst Country
Drive west through Puerto Rico’s dramatic karst landscape — thousands of limestone hills (mogotes) shaped like giant haystacks. Visit the Camuy River Cave Park, one of the world’s largest cave systems, with a 400-foot sinkhole and an underground river. Continue to Arecibo, home of the former Arecibo Observatory — while the radio telescope collapsed in 2020, the visitor center tells the story of one of science’s most important instruments. Lunch in Arecibo town. Afternoon: visit Cueva Ventana (Window Cave), a cliff-side cave with a natural window framing the Río Grande de Arecibo valley below. Return to San Juan. Overnight in San Juan Condado.
Day 5: Culebra Island — Flamenco Beach Paradise
Early morning ferry or flight to Culebra Island, home to Flamenco Beach — consistently ranked among the world’s best beaches with its crescent of powder-white sand and impossibly turquoise water. Spend the morning snorkeling among healthy coral gardens. Visit the abandoned World War II tanks on the beach — now covered in colorful graffiti, an unexpected art installation. Lunch at a local seafood shack. Afternoon swim at Tamarindo Beach, known for sea turtle sightings. Return to mainland in the evening. Overnight in San Juan Condado.
Day 6: Ponce — The Pearl of the South
Scenic drive across the Cordillera Central mountains to Ponce, Puerto Rico’s second city. Visit the iconic Parque de Bombas, the red-and-black striped former firehouse that’s the city’s symbol. Tour the Ponce Museum of Art, housing the finest collection of European and Puerto Rican art in the Caribbean. Lunch in Plaza Las Delicias. Morning visit to Guánica Dry Forest, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — the world’s best-preserved subtropical dry forest with over 700 plant species, 48 of them endangered. Continue to Cabo Rojo for the dramatic limestone cliffs and the Los Morrillos Lighthouse, perched 200 feet above the Caribbean with spectacular views. Swim at Playa Sucia (Dirty Beach — despite the name, its turquoise water is pristine) in a protected cove. Farewell dinner in San Juan: lechón asado (roast pork) at a traditional Guavate-style restaurant. Overnight in San Juan Condado.
Day 8: Depart San Juan
Morning at leisure. Transfer to airport.
