Day 1-2: Islamabad to Swat Valley
- Takht-i-Bahi — 1st-century Buddhist monastery (UNESCO), one of the best-preserved in South Asia. Monastery cells, stupa court, and meditation chambers still intact on a hilltop overlooking the plains
- Mingora & Saidu Sharif — Swat Valley’s twin cities. Visit the Swat Museum with its remarkable Gandhara Buddhist art. The valley was once a major center of Buddhism — the “cradle of Buddhism” that spread the faith to Central Asia and China
- Malam Jabba — Pakistan’s premier ski resort at 2,804m with a chairlift and zip line. In summer, hike through pine forests with panoramic valley views
- Mahodand Lake — Stunning alpine lake at 2,865m, accessible by 4WD. Boating, fishing for trout, and hiking to surrounding glaciers
Day 3-4: Chitral & Kalash Valleys
- Drive over the Lowari Tunnel to Chitral — the landscape turns increasingly remote and dramatic
- Kalash Valleys (Bumburet, Rumbur, Birir) — The Kalash people are utterly unique: the last surviving Indo-European pagan community, practicing an animistic religion with Greek, Hindu, and ancient Persian influences. Their culture is believed to date back 3,000+ years, possibly to Alexander the Great’s army
- Walk through the valleys: wooden houses with elaborate carved pillars, women in distinctive black robes with colorful embroidery and cowrie shell headpieces, temples to their pantheon of gods, and the bashali (menstruation/seclusion house) — a controversial but culturally significant tradition
- If timing aligns: witness a Kalash festival (Chilam Joshi in May, Uchau in August, Choimus in December) with traditional dancing, chanting, and the consumption of local walnut wine
Day 5: Shandur Pass — World’s Highest Polo Ground
- Drive the dramatic road to the Shandur Pass (3,700m), site of the annual Shandur Polo Festival (July). The polo ground is the world’s highest, surrounded by snow-capped peaks. The game here is played with minimal rules and maximum passion — Shandur polo is raw, fierce, and utterly authentic
- Return via the Mastuj Valley, passing ancient forts and terraced wheat fields
Day 6-7: Peshawar & Departure
- Peshawar — One of South Asia’s oldest continuously inhabited cities (2,500+ years). Qissa Khwani Bazaar (Street of Storytellers), Mahabat Khan Mosque (1630, stunning Mughal-era frescoes), and the legendary Peshawari chappal (sandal) makers
- Transfer to Islamabad for departure
