The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is widely considered one of the world’s greatest treks. This 9-day adventure combines the classic Inca Trail with cultural immersion in Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Over four unforgettable days, you’ll hike ancient stone pathways through cloud forests, past Inca ruins, and over high mountain passes — culminating in the awe-inspiring sunrise arrival at Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate (Inti Punku).

Day 1: Arrival in Lima

  • Welcome to Peru — Arrive at Jorge Chavez International Airport. Transfer to your hotel in the Miraflores district
  • Evening Briefing — Meet your tour leader for a welcome dinner and detailed trip briefing. Sample Peru’s national dish — ceviche — freshly prepared with lime-marinated fish, sweet potato, and Andean corn
  • Lima by Night — Stroll the cliff-top Malecon promenade with stunning Pacific Ocean views. The Parque del Amor (Love Park) features Gaudí-inspired mosaics and a giant kissing sculpture

Overnight in Lima.

Day 2: Fly to Cusco — Acclimatization Day

  • Morning Flight — Scenic 1.5-hour flight over the snow-capped Andes to Cusco (3,399m)
  • Cusco City Tour — Gentle walking tour of the Plaza de Armas, Qorikancha (the Inca Temple of the Sun, upon which Santo Domingo Convent was built — a powerful symbol of Spanish conquest over Inca civilization), and the bohemian neighborhood of San Blas with its artisan workshops
  • Sacsayhuaman — The colossal Inca fortress above Cusco, built with megalithic stones precisely cut and fitted without mortar. The largest stone is estimated at over 125 tons. Each year on June 24th, the Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun) is reenacted here
  • Rest and hydrate — proper acclimatization is essential before the trek

Overnight in Cusco.

Day 3: Sacred Valley Exploration

  • Pisac Archaeological Park — Trek through the upper ruins sector with spectacular mountain-top views. The Inca cemetery, with hundreds of tombs carved into the cliff face, is the largest in South America
  • Moray — Mysterious concentric circular terraces that descend 150m into the earth like an amphitheater. Scientists believe the Incas used Moray as an agricultural laboratory, with temperature differences of up to 15°C between the top and bottom terraces creating microclimates for crop experimentation
  • Maras Salt Mines — Over 3,000 shimmering salt pools cascading down a valley slope since pre-Inca times. An underground hypersaline spring feeds the terraced evaporation ponds, each owned by a local family. The contrast of white salt against the red-brown earth is spectacular
  • Ollantaytambo — Explore the “Living Inca City,” where the original Inca street grid is still inhabited. Climb the fortress terraces for commanding views of the town and valley

Overnight in Ollantaytambo.

Day 4: Inca Trail Day 1 — Km 82 to Wayllabamba

  • Trailhead at Km 82 (2,600m) — After a hearty breakfast, drive to the official start of the Inca Trail at Piscacucho (Km 82). Meet your trekking crew: professional guides, porters (legendary for their strength and endurance), and cook
  • Trekking Distance — 12km / 7.5 miles (5-6 hours, moderate)
  • Route Highlights — Cross the Urubamba River on a suspension bridge. Climb gently through cactus-studded terrain with views of the snow-capped Veronica Peak (5,860m). Pass the Inca ruins of Patallacta and Willkarakay, sitting on opposing ridge tops
  • Camp at Wayllabamba (3,000m) — Arrive at camp where your tents are already set up. Enjoy an impressive three-course dinner prepared by your trekking chef

Overnight: Camp at Wayllabamba.

Day 5: Inca Trail Day 2 — Dead Woman’s Pass to Pacaymayo

  • Trekking Distance — 11km / 7 miles (6-7 hours, challenging — the hardest day)
  • Ascent to Dead Woman’s Pass (Warmiwañusqa, 4,215m) — A steep 5-hour climb through cloud forest that transitions to high-altitude puna grassland. The pass is named for its silhouette resembling a reclining woman. The sense of achievement upon reaching the summit is indescribable
  • Descend to Pacaymayo (3,600m) — A knee-testing 2-hour descent into the Pacaymayo Valley. Spectacular views of the trail ahead winding through mountain passes
  • Flora & Fauna — Keep an eye out for hummingbirds, the Andean spectacled bear (South America’s only bear species), and bromeliads clinging to trees in the cloud forest zone

Overnight: Camp at Pacaymayo.

Day 6: Inca Trail Day 3 — Runkurakay to Wiñay Wayna

  • Trekking Distance — 16km / 10 miles (8-9 hours, the longest but most beautiful day)
  • Runkurakay Pass (3,970m) — Climb past the circular Inca watchtower ruins of Runkurakay. From the pass, stunning views back toward Dead Woman’s Pass
  • Sayacmarca — An inaccessible-looking Inca fortress clinging to a sheer cliff. A narrow stone staircase leads to the ruins with panoramic views over the Aobamba Valley
  • Phuyupatamarca (The City in the Clouds) — Third pass (3,680m) and arguably the most beautiful ruin on the trail. Six ceremonial fountains still channel water through perfectly cut stone channels
  • Wiñay Wayna — The most spectacular Inca site on the trail after Machu Picchu itself. Its name means “Forever Young” in Quechua. The massive agricultural terraces plunge into the valley, bathed by a cascade of 19 water channels. The site includes a temple, living quarters, and watchpost

Overnight: Camp near Wiñay Wayna (2,680m).

Day 7: Inca Trail Day 4 — Sun Gate to Machu Picchu!

  • Pre-dawn Start — Wake at 3:30 AM. Hike the final 6km in the dark by headlamp, the anticipation building with every step
  • Inti Punku (Sun Gate, 2,720m) — As dawn breaks, you crest the final ridge and behold the most iconic view in South America — Machu Picchu bathed in the golden light of sunrise, with Huayna Picchu rising behind it. This moment — earned after four days of trekking — is the reason the Inca Trail is on every adventurer’s bucket list
  • Machu Picchu Guided Tour — Descend to the citadel for a comprehensive 2.5-hour guided tour. As trekkers who arrived through the Sun Gate, you follow the same path the Inca pilgrims used 500 years ago. Your guide explains the citadel’s masterful construction, astronomical alignments, and the mysteries that endure about this “Lost City”
  • Free Time — Your final hours at Machu Picchu to explore independently, meditate on the terraces, or simply soak in the atmosphere

Overnight in Aguas Calientes with celebratory dinner.

Day 8: Return to Cusco

  • Leisurely Morning — Optional visit to the Aguas Calientes hot springs (natural thermal baths), perfect for soothing tired muscles
  • Scenic Train & Bus — Return train to Ollantaytambo, then private bus to Cusco. The journey back is filled with reflection on the incredible experience
  • Farewell Dinner — Celebrate your achievement at one of Cusco’s finest restaurants. Toast with a Pisco Sour — Peru’s national cocktail

Overnight in Cusco.
