Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Tbilisi to Kakheti Wine Country
Drive east into the Alazani Valley, Georgia’s premier wine region with 8,000 years of viniculture. Stop at the Bodbe Monastery (St. Nino’s resting place) with its beautiful gardens. Arrive in Sighnaghi, the “City of Love” — a beautifully restored hilltop town with 4km of defensive walls and epic Caucasus views. Visit the Pheasant’s Tears winery, a leader in Georgia’s natural wine revolution, for a tasting of amber wines made in qvevri. Overnight in a converted wine chateau in Sighnaghi.
Day 2: Kakheti Deep Dive
Visit Tsinandali Estate, the 19th-century home of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze — Georgia’s first winery built in European style with a stunning English garden. Continue to the 11th-century Alaverdi Monastery, still producing wine to this day. Afternoon at Twins Wine House in Napareuli — taste wines from 107 qvevri buried underground. Masterclass: make churchkhela (walnuts dipped in grape must). Overnight in Telavi at a family winery.
Day 3: Telavi to Omalo — The Tusheti Road
Early departure for Tusheti. The legendary Abano Pass road (2,826m) is one of the world’s most spectacular drives — a narrow dirt track carved into the mountainside with 72 switchbacks. Stop at the summit for views into Dagestan, Russia. Arrive in Omalo, the capital of Tusheti. Visit the Keselo Fortress, a complex of defensive towers restored in the 2000s. Overnight in a Tushetian guesthouse.
Day 4: Dartlo & Parsma — Tusheti’s Medieval Villages
4×4 and hike to Dartlo, one of Georgia’s most beautiful villages with slate-roofed stone towers and houses along the Pirikiti Alazani River. Continue to Parsma, an even more remote settlement where life has barely changed in centuries. Lunch with a Tushetian family: kotori (sheep cheese-filled khinkali) and guda cheese aged in sheepskin. Return to Omalo for a folk evening with Tushetian songs.
Day 5: Shenako & Diklo
Hike or horse ride to Shenako, a tiny village of stone houses with a unique Georgian Orthodox church. Continue to the Diklo fortress towers on the border with Dagestan. The views of the Pirikiti Range are staggering. Afternoon free in Omalo for horseback riding or relaxing at the guesthouse. Overnight in Omalo.
Day 6: Return to Kakheti
Descend the Abano Pass in morning light. Stop at Gremi, the 16th-century citadel and royal residence of Kakheti, with frescoes depicting Georgian kings. Afternoon visit to the Shumi Winery and its wine museum with a 300-year-old qvevri. Farewell supra dinner with a tamada (toastmaster). Overnight in Telavi.
Day 7: Return to Tbilisi
Visit the David Gareja cave monastery complex (6th century) carved into the semi-desert on the Azerbaijan border. Remarkable frescoes in the Lavra monastery. Continue to Tbilisi. Transfer to airport or hotel.
