Day 1: Arrive Budapest
- Arrive BUD airport. Private transfer to your boutique hotel in the historic Jewish Quarter (District VII) — Budapest’s coolest neighborhood. Evening walk through the area, discovering its street art, kosher bakeries, and the city’s famous ruin bars. Szimpla Kert — the original ruin bar, created in 2002 in an abandoned factory — is a labyrinth of mismatched furniture, eclectic art, a Trabant car converted into seating, and fairy lights. The ruin bar phenomenon — repurposing derelict buildings into bohemian hangouts — was born in this neighborhood

Day 2: Buda Castle & Thermal Baths
- Morning on Buda Hill: Castle District walking tour — Royal Palace (now housing the Hungarian National Gallery and Budapest History Museum), Matthias Church, Fisherman’s Bastion, and panoramic views over the Danube to the Parliament. The Castle District, with its medieval streets, Baroque townhouses, and the house where Beethoven once stayed, feels like a village within the city
- Afternoon at the Szechenyi Thermal Baths — Europe’s largest medicinal bath complex (1913), an opulent Neo-Baroque palace with 15 indoor pools and 3 vast outdoor pools. The outdoor thermal pool (38°C) — where elderly Hungarian men play chess on floating boards — is iconic. Bathing in Budapest is a 2,000-year-old tradition: the Romans built the first baths here (Aquincum), the Ottomans added domed Turkish baths in the 16th century (Rudas, Kiraly — still operating!), and the golden age of Hungarian spa culture peaked in the early 20th century. The mineral-rich waters (containing calcium, magnesium, and hydrogen-carbonate) emerge from 1,200m underground at 77°C and are cooled for bathing

Day 3: Pest & Danube Cruise
- Morning on Pest side: Andrassy Avenue (UNESCO), Heroes’ Square, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and the sprawling Great Market Hall (see Tour 1 for details)
- Visit the House of Terror — one of Europe’s most powerful museums, housed in the former headquarters of both the Nazi Arrow Cross Party and the communist AVH (secret police). The museum traces Hungary’s 20th-century totalitarian experiences through immersive installations — the basement, where prisoners were held and tortured, is particularly harrowing
- Evening: Danube River Cruise — see Budapest’s illuminated landmarks from the water

Day 4: Danube Bend & Etyek Wine Region
- Morning excursion to the Danube Bend: Esztergom Basilica (Hungary’s largest church), Visegrad Castle (spectacular Danube views), and the artist village of Szentendre (see Tour 1 for details)
- Afternoon: Etyek Wine Region — Hungary’s youngest wine region, 30 km west of Budapest. Known for fresh, mineral-driven white wines (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and the indigenous Olaszrizling), Etyek’s limestone soil and cooling breezes from the Buda Hills create a microclimate reminiscent of Champagne. Visit two family-run wineries for tastings and cellar tours. Hungarian wine — with 22 designated wine regions — is one of Europe’s best-kept secrets: Tokaji Aszu (the world’s first botrytized sweet wine, described by Louis XIV as “Wine of Kings, King of Wines”), Egri Bikaver (Bull’s Blood — a robust red blend), and the elegant whites of Somlo and Etyek
- Farewell dinner at a traditional Hungarian restaurant — goulash soup (gulyasleves — slow-cooked beef soup with paprika, carrots, and potatoes), chicken paprikash (csirkepaprikas — creamy paprika sauce with sour cream, served with dumplings / nokedli), and Dobos torte (the iconic Hungarian layered sponge cake with chocolate buttercream and caramel glaze, created in 1885 by confectioner Jozsef Dobos)

Day 5: Depart Budapest
- Morning at leisure — perhaps one last visit to a thermal bath (Gellert Baths, with their Art Nouveau mosaics) or shopping on Vaci Street. Transfer to Budapest Airport. Viszontlatasra!
