3-Day Eswatini Safari: Hlane Royal NP Big 5 & Mlilwane Walking Safari

Day 1: Hlane Royal National Park — Land of the King

Morning pick-up from King Mswati III International Airport or Mbabane. Scenic drive through Swazi countryside to Hlane Royal National Park, Eswatini’s largest protected area covering over 30,000 hectares. Hlane (meaning “wilderness” in siSwati) was once the private hunting ground of Swazi kings and remains under the custodianship of His Majesty King Mswati III. Check into Ndlovu Camp, set beneath towering hardwood trees beside a waterhole. After lunch, embark on an afternoon game drive in open 4×4 safari vehicles. Hlane supports healthy populations of white rhinoceros, elephant, giraffe, wildebeest, zebra, and impala. The park’s lion enclosure (a separate 100-hectare area) allows safe viewing of Eswatini’s apex predators. Visit the main waterhole hide — sit silently as elephants and rhinos approach within meters to drink. Evening dinner under the stars. Overnight at Ndlovu Camp inside the park.

Day 2: Sunrise Game Drive & Mlilwane Walking Safari

Rise before dawn for a sunrise game drive — the golden hour when wildlife is most active. Watch giraffe silhouettes against the rising sun and track rhinos as they emerge from the bush. Return for breakfast, then transfer to Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary in the scenic Ezulwini Valley (“Valley of Heaven”), surrounded by the dramatic Nyonyane Mountain and Execution Rock. Mlilwane is Eswatini’s oldest conservation area and offers a unique predator-free safari experience ideal for walking. Check into Reilly’s Rock Hilltop Lodge (the historic 1908 residence of Mickey Reilly) or Mlilwane Rest Camp. Afternoon guided walking safari across open grasslands dotted with zebra, wildebeest, blesbok, nyala, and warthogs. Your guide shares traditional Swazi knowledge of medicinal plants and animal tracking. Walk to the hippo pool for close views of these surprisingly agile giants. Birdlife is exceptional — look for purple-crested turacos and narina trogons. Overnight at Mlilwane.

Day 3: Cultural Market Visit & Departure

Optional sunrise nature walk or mountain bike ride through Mlilwane before breakfast. Morning visit to a nearby Swazi handicraft market where artisans sell intricate grass weavings, carved wooden bowls, and colorful batik fabrics. Meet the craftspeople and learn about Swazi artistic traditions. If time permits, a short stop at Ngwenya Glass to watch artisans blow recycled glass into stunning art pieces (weekday demonstrations only). Transfer to King Mswati III Airport or the Oshoek/Ngwenya border with South Africa.
