Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Funchal
Arrival and transfer to your premium hotel, Pestana Casino Studios or similar, overlooking the Funchal harbor. Welcome dinner with your expert mountain guide who will brief you on the week’s adventures. Overnight in Funchal.
Day 2: Ponta de São Lourenço
Start the week with Madeira’s most dramatic coastal walk at the easternmost peninsula. The stark, lunar-like landscape of volcanic tuff in reds, ochres, and blacks contrasts vividly with the turquoise Atlantic on both sides. This is the driest part of Madeira, resembling the Canary Islands more than the lush interior. Reach the Casa do Sardinha for lunch with views over the Desertas Islands nature reserve. Distance: 8km. Overnight in Machico.
Day 3: Boca do Risco Coastal Path
Walk the Boca do Risco path, one of Madeira’s best-kept secrets. This old coastal trail carved into the northern cliffs offers jaw-dropping views with almost no other hikers. The path traverses the wild north coast from Caniçal to Porto da Cruz, 300m above the pounding surf. Visit the Porto da Cruz rum distillery for a well-earned tasting. Distance: 12km. Overnight in Machico.
Day 4: Levada do Caldeirão Verde
Drive to the Queimadas Forest Park in Santana to walk the Levada do Caldeirão Verde. This iconic levada leads through lush Laurissilva forest and several tunnels to the Caldeirão Verde (Green Cauldron), a massive amphitheater waterfall plunging 100m down a sheer moss-covered wall. The engineering feat of the levada becomes apparent as you walk through tunnels carved by hand through solid rock. Distance: 13km. Overnight in Santana.
Day 5: Pico Ruivo Summit Circuit
The ultimate Madeira hiking challenge. Start at Achada do Teixeira and climb to Pico Ruivo before dawn. Watch sunrise from the rooftop of Madeira at 1,862m — an unforgettable spectacle as the peaks emerge from the cloud sea. Continue along the ridge trail, with sections cut directly into the cliff face, offering 360-degree views of the entire island. Distance: 14km. Overnight in Santana.
Day 6: Rabaçal & 25 Fontes
Descend into the Rabaçal valley, the green heart of Madeira. Walk the Levada das 25 Fontes through tunnels and along a fern-lined path to the famous 25 Springs waterfall. At the base, watch as water cascades from dozens of separate sources in a natural amphitheater. Continue to the Risco waterfall viewpoint. Distance: 11km. Overnight in Funchal.
Day 7: Funchal & Monte
Lighter day: take the cable car to Monte and visit the Monte Palace gardens. Optional wicker toboggan ride down to Funchal. Afternoon visit to the Blandy’s Madeira Wine Lodge for a tour of the 200-year-old cellars where wine ages in oak casks in the warm attics — the unique estufagem process. Farewell dinner at a gourmet restaurant overlooking Funchal Bay. Overnight in Funchal.
