Itinerary Highlights
Day 1-2: Dakar & Goree Island
Arrive Dakar. Day 2: explore Goree Island — House of Slaves, historic fort, artists’ quarter. Afternoon at IFAN Museum and Sandaga Market. Overnight in Dakar.
Day 3-4: Saloum Delta
Travel south to the Saloum Delta. Two days exploring by pirogue — mangrove forests, Serer shell-mound villages, and abundant birdlife. Visit Fadiouth, the island entirely built from clamshells. See the mixed Christian-Muslim cemetery where both religions share the same burial ground — a symbol of Senegal’s religious harmony. Overnight in Palmarin or Ndangane.
Day 5-6: The Gambia River & Casamance
Cross into The Gambia (visa on arrival for most nationalities). Visit the Wassu stone circles, a UNESCO site of megalithic monuments dating back over 1,000 years. Continue into Senegal’s Casamance region — lush, green, and culturally distinct. Arrive in Ziguinchor, the region’s capital with its charming Creole architecture. Overnight in Ziguinchor.
Day 7: Oussouye & Diola Culture
Explore the Casamance villages of the Diola people. Visit the royal village of Oussouye and, if timing allows, the sacred kapok tree of the animist king. Learn about Diola rice cultivation and palm wine tapping. Traditional lunch in a village. Afternoon at the vibrant Ziguinchor market. Overnight in Ziguinchor.
Day 8: Cap Skirring — Atlantic Beaches
Drive to Cap Skirring, one of West Africa’s most beautiful beaches. Day at leisure to swim, walk the endless golden sand, or take a pirogue trip to offshore islands. Sunset seafood dinner on the beach. Overnight in Cap Skirring.
Day 9: Return to Dakar via Kaolack
Long but scenic drive back north, passing through villages and countryside that show Senegal’s diverse landscapes. Stop at Kaolack’s famous central market. Arrive in Dakar by evening. Farewell dinner. Overnight in Dakar.
Day 10: Depart Dakar
Morning at leisure. Transfer to airport.
