Day 1: Arrive Sao Vicente — Welcome to Mindelo, Cape Verde’s Cultural Capital
Arrive at Cesaria Evora International Airport, named for the legendary singer who put this small island on the world’s musical map. Just 15 minutes from the airport, Mindelo unfolds around a magnificent natural harbour — Porto Grande Bay — created by the submerged crater of yet another volcano. Day 3: Monte Verde Natural Park, Baia das Gatas & Sand Dunes
Today explores Sao Vicente beyond Mindelo. Morning: drive into the island’s volcanic interior and up Monte Verde, at 750 meters the highest point on Sao Vicente. The mountain is a protected natural park, and the road winds through increasingly sparse vegetation before reaching the summit. From the top, the panoramic view encompasses the entire island — 227 square kilometers of volcanic desert, sculpted mountains, and the deep blue Atlantic — and across the 16-kilometer Sao Vicente Channel to Santo Antao, whose jagged peaks often create their own weather. A local guide leads a short walk on the summit trails, pointing out endemic plants and bird species. Enjoy a local tea tasting — Cape Verdean herbal infusions made from local leaves and flowers. Descend to the northeastern coast and a stunning contrast: Baia das Gatas (Bay of Cats), a sheltered lagoon formed by a natural volcanic reef. For the more actively inclined: visit the Mindelo fish market in the early morning when the night’s catch is auctioned, a vivid slice of local life; explore the city’s emerging art scene in small independent galleries; take a taxi to the village of Calhau on the east coast and walk among its volcanic rock formations; or join a fishing trip with local fishermen (arranged locally). Food lovers might seek out cachupa at a traditional restaurant — especially cachupa refogada, the fried, richer version made from leftovers and typically eaten for breakfast — or sample the grilled lobster at the harbour-front restaurants.
