Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive São Tomé
Arrive at São Tomé International Airport. Your guide meets you with a warm “Bô noite!” (Good evening in Forro Creole). Transfer through lush tropical landscapes to your boutique hotel, the Omali Lodge, a converted plantation house on the coast. Afternoon orientation: stroll along the palm-fringed beaches near your lodge. Welcome dinner featuring São Tomé’s remarkable cuisine: calulu (smoked fish stew with vegetables), grilled Atlantic fish, and the world’s finest organic chocolate for dessert. Overnight at Omali Lodge.
Day 2: São Tomé City & Northern Coast
Morning exploration of São Tomé City, one of Africa’s smallest and most charming capitals. Visit the Sé Cathedral (16th century), the São Sebastião Fortress (1566) housing the National Museum with exhibits on the islands’ Portuguese colonial history and the slave trade. Visit the bustling Central Market to see the bounty of this equatorial island: vanilla pods, coffee beans, tropical fruits, and bundles of cinnamon bark. Afternoon: drive north along the scenic coast road. Visit the Água Izé plantation, one of the islands’ original cocoa estates where you learn about the journey from cacao pod to chocolate bar. Visit the dramatic Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth) blowhole where Atlantic waves crash into a narrow volcanic chasm. Overnight at Omali Lodge.
Day 3: Ôbo Natural Park & Pico Cão Grande
Full-day expedition into Ôbo Natural Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve covering nearly 30% of São Tomé island in pristine primary rainforest. Morning trek through the orchid garden at Bom Sucesso Botanical Garden, then drive to the interior via winding mountain roads. The highlight: a stop at the viewpoint for Pico Cão Grande (Great Dog Peak) — an astonishing phonolitic volcanic plug rising 663 meters straight up from the jungle floor, one of the most dramatic geological formations in Africa and a challenge for elite rock climbers. Continue to the Lagoa Amélia crater lake at 1,400 meters elevation. Afternoon forest walk to spot endemic birds including the São Tomé ibis, giant sunbird, and São Tomé paradise flycatcher — over 28 bird species found nowhere else on Earth. Overnight at Omali Lodge.
Day 4: Fly to Príncipe — The Eden Island
Morning flight (35 minutes) to Príncipe Island, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve nicknamed “the Eden of Africa” for its pristine beauty. Príncipe has just 8,000 inhabitants and feels like stepping into a lost world. Transfer to Bom Bom Island Resort, a collection of bungalows on a tiny islet connected to Príncipe by a wooden footbridge. Afternoon at leisure: swim in the crystal-clear Bay of Needles, snorkel on the house reef, or simply nap in a hammock. Evening: sunset cocktail on the Bom Bom jetty watching the sky explode in orange and pink over the Atlantic. Overnight at Bom Bom Resort.
Day 5: Príncipe Deep Exploration
Full-day exploration of Príncipe. Morning visit to Santo António, the island’s capital, a photogenic colonial town of pastel-colored Portuguese buildings, bougainvillea-draped balconies, and cobblestone streets that time forgot. Visit the 16th-century church and the colorful market. Afternoon: trek into Príncipe’s Obo Natural Park to Praia Banana — arguably one of Africa’s most beautiful beaches, a perfect golden crescent backed by towering palm trees, made famous by a 1990s Bacardi rum commercial. Swim in warm turquoise water with visibility exceeding 30 meters. Visit a traditional fishing community. Overnight at Bom Bom Resort.
Day 6: Príncipe — Chocolate & Turtle Conservation
Morning visit to the Claudio Corallo Chocolate Factory, where one of the world’s most renowned artisanal chocolatiers has been perfecting bean-to-bar chocolate on Príncipe for decades. Tour the plantation to understand the restoration of abandoned cocoa estates and sample chocolate that connoisseurs rank among the world’s finest. Afternoon: visit the Príncipe Trust, a conservation organization working to protect the island’s unique biodiversity. During nesting season (November-March), a guided visit to observe sea turtles laying eggs on the island’s protected beaches. Overnight at Bom Bom Resort.
Day 7: Return to São Tomé — Southern Coast
Morning flight back to São Tomé. Afternoon exploration of the rarely-visited southern coast. Visit Porto Alegre, a fishing village near the Equator line marker — you’re standing at 0° latitude. Take a boat to Ilhéu das Rolas, the tiny island bisected by the Equator, where you can stand with one foot in the Northern Hemisphere and one in the Southern. Swim and snorkel in the warm equatorial waters. Farewell dinner at São Tomé City’s best restaurant featuring the islands’ fusion of African, Portuguese, and Brazilian flavors. Overnight at Omali Lodge.
Day 8: Departure
Morning at leisure — last opportunity to purchase São Tomé’s incredible coffee, chocolate, and vanilla at the Central Market. Transfer to airport.
