Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Bucharest to Sinaia — Royal Beginnings
Private pickup from your Bucharest hotel. Drive to Sinaia for a guided tour of Peles Castle, the spectacular Neo-Renaissance palace of Romanian kings. Explore the armory room with 4,000+ weapons, the Moorish Salon, and the Imperial Suite. Afternoon visit to Sinaia Monastery. Continue to Bran, check into your guesthouse with views of Bran Castle illuminated at night. Welcome dinner featuring traditional Transylvanian cuisine.
Day 2: Bran Castle to Brasov — Dracula’s Domain
Morning visit to Bran Castle before the crowds arrive. With your private guide, explore every corner of this 14th-century fortress: the secret staircase, Queen Marie’s tea house, and the spooky torture chamber. The castle museum presents the Dracula myth alongside the real history of Vlad the Impaler. Afternoon transfer to Brasov. Walking tour of the medieval Saxon city: the Black Church, the Rope Street, the old city walls with the White and Black Towers. Evening free to explore Brasov’s excellent restaurants. Overnight at Casa Timar guesthouse.
Day 3: Brasov to Sighisoara — Saxon Villages
Depart Brasov through the heart of Transylvania. Visit the UNESCO-listed fortified church of Viscri, where time seems to have stood still. Walk through the village where Prince Charles of Wales owns a traditional Saxon house. Continue to Sighisoara, the only inhabited medieval citadel in Europe that’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. Afternoon guided tour: the Clock Tower with its wooden figurines, the Scholars’ Stairs, the Church on the Hill with 500-year-old frescoes, and Vlad Dracul’s birth house. Overnight in Sighisoara.
Day 4: Sighisoara to Sibiu — Biertan & Saxon Heritage
Morning visit to Biertan, the UNESCO-listed fortified church that served as the seat of the Transylvanian Saxon bishops for 300 years. See the famous “divorce room” where couples were locked together for two weeks to save their marriage — legend says only one divorce occurred in 300 years. Continue to Sibiu, the 2007 European Capital of Culture. Afternoon walking tour: the Grand Square, the Liars’ Bridge, the Council Tower, and the Brukenthal Palace. Evening at leisure in Sibiu’s vibrant squares. Overnight in Sibiu.
Day 5: Sibiu to Bucharest — Transfagarasan Highway
Morning at leisure in Sibiu — visit the open-air ASTRA Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization if time permits. Depart for Bucharest via the spectacular Transfagarasan Highway (weather permitting, June-October), one of the world’s most dramatic roads winding through the Fagaras Mountains. Visit Poienari Fortress, Vlad the Impaler’s actual mountain refuge. Arrive in Bucharest for hotel drop-off or airport transfer, carrying unforgettable memories of Transylvania’s magic.
