Day 1: Arrival in N’Djamena — Gateway to the Sahara

Day 2: N’Djamena to the Sahara — Journey to the Desert

Early morning departure from N’Djamena, driving northeast into the Sahara. The journey takes you through the Sahelian transition zone — acacia scrub gradually gives way to open desert as the landscape becomes increasingly arid. Stop at the village of Moussoro, a traditional Sahelian trading post where camel caravans still pass through. Continue to the town of Kalait, the last significant settlement before the true desert begins. By late afternoon, the Ounianga Lakes appear on the horizon — an impossible shimmer of blue water in a landscape of sand and rock. The first glimpse of Lake Yoan, the largest of the Ounianga Kebir group, is a moment of genuine astonishment — a vast body of deep blue water surrounded by date palms and golden dunes, existing in a place that logic says should be lifeless desert. Day 3: Ounianga Kebir — The Four Lakes & Desert Oasis

Wake to one of travel’s most surreal scenes — opening your tent to see a freshwater lake in the heart of the Sahara, date palms rustling in the morning breeze, and the distant call of birds echoing across the water. Spend the day exploring the Ounianga Kebir group — four lakes (Yoan, Uma, Mioji, and Forodom) clustered together in a single depression. Despite being only meters apart, each lake has its own distinct color determined by its unique chemistry — some are deep blue, others emerald green, and others turquoise. Visit the small settlement of Ounianga Kebir, where the local population tends date palm groves irrigated by the lakes’ fresh surface water. Walk through the palm groves — a surreal experience of shade, greenery, and birdsong in the middle of the Sahara. Learn how the ingenious local irrigation system works: the surface layer of the lakes is freshwater (supported by the fossil aquifer), while the deeper layers are saline. Day 4: Ounianga Serir — Lakeside Village & Desert Landscape

After breaking camp, drive 40 kilometers through a landscape of sand dunes and rocky plains to reach the Ounianga Serir group — 14 lakes of varying sizes and colors, scattered across a wider area and separated by dramatic dune formations. The approach to Ounianga Serir is spectacular: the lakes appear in succession as you crest each dune, each more improbable than the last — brilliant turquoise waters framed by golden sand, with the dark volcanic rocks of the Tibesti foothills on the northern horizon. Visit the village of Ounianga Serir, where traditional Tubu architecture clings to a rocky cliff overlooking Lake Teli, the group’s largest lake. The houses seem to grow from the rock itself, their ochre walls blending with the natural stone. Day 5: Final Lakes Exploration & Southern Journey

Spend the morning exploring the remaining lakes of Ounianga Serir. Each has its own character: some are circular and deep, others are irregular and dotted with islands of vegetation. Birdlife is surprisingly abundant — the lakes attract migratory species crossing the Sahara, and resident populations of waders, ducks, and herons. For birders, species like the northern pintail, garganey, and spur-winged goose can be observed seasonally. Your guide will explain UNESCO’s criteria for inscribing the lakes as a World Heritage site in 2012: they represent an ‘outstanding example of a traditional human settlement representative of a culture’ and contain ‘superlative natural phenomena of exceptional natural beauty.’ Midday, begin the journey back southward toward N’Djamena. Break camp early for the final drive to N’Djamena, arriving by mid-afternoon. The transition from absolute desert to the relative bustle of Chad’s capital is always jarring after days in the Sahara’s vast silence. Check into a day-use hotel room for freshening up. For those with evening flights, there is time for last-minute shopping at N’Djamena’s artisan center — pick up Tubu handicrafts, date products from the Ounianga palm groves, and traditional textiles to remind you of your Saharan adventure. Transfer to N’Djamena International Airport for your departure flight. As you leave Chad, you carry the rare privilege of having witnessed the Ounianga Lakes — one of the Sahara’s most beautiful and scientifically significant places, a natural wonder that defies explanation and demands to be seen.
