Itinerary Highlights
Day 1-2: Yangon — The Colonial Gateway
Arrive Yangon. Day 2: full exploration — Shwedagon Pagoda at sunrise (when the gold glows softest and monks chant morning prayers), Sule Pagoda, colonial walking tour (Strand Hotel, High Court, Customs House), Bogyoke Market, Kandawgyi Lake, Chaukhtatgyi Reclining Buddha. Evening at Chinatown for street food. Overnight in Yangon.
Day 3-4: Bagan — The Temple City
Fly to Bagan. Two full days exploring the temple plain — sunrise and sunset each day from different temples, each offering a unique perspective. Visit the major temples: Ananda (the masterpiece), Thatbyinnyu (the tallest), Dhammayangyi (the mysterious), Sulamani, and Shwezigon. Horse cart ride through remote temples. Lacquerware workshop. Floating above the temples in a hot air balloon at dawn (optional, seasonal). Overnight in Bagan.
Day 5: Mount Popa & Kalaw
Morning excursion to Mount Popa, the “Mount Olympus of Myanmar” — climb 777 steps to the golden temple on the volcanic plug, surrounded by mischievous monkeys. Afternoon drive to Kalaw, a charming hill station at 1,320 meters with cool air, pine forests, and colonial-era bungalows — a world apart from the tropical plains. Overnight in Kalaw.
Day 6-8: Inle Lake — Life on Water
Drive to Inle Lake in the Shan State. Three days exploring this unique highland lake (875 meters). Day 6: boat tour — the legendary Intha fishermen who row with one leg while casting nets, floating gardens of tomatoes and flowers, traditional silk and lotus weaving workshops, and the Nga Phe Kyaung “Jumping Cat” Monastery. Day 7: Indein village and its forest of 1,000+ ancient pagodas — some 800 years old, half-consumed by jungle. Day 8: market day at one of the five-day rotating floating markets — Shan, Pa-O, and Intha tribes gather to trade. Overnight at lakeside hotel.
Day 9-10: Mandalay — The Royal City
Fly to Mandalay. Two days exploring the old royal capital. Day 9: Mahamuni Pagoda, Shwenandaw Monastery (teak carving), Kuthodaw Pagoda (the world’s largest book), and sunset from Mandalay Hill. Day 10: boat to Mingun — the massive unfinished pagoda, the 90-ton bell, and the whimsical Hsinbyume Pagoda (a white wave temple). Afternoon: Amarapura — U Bein Bridge at sunset. Overnight in Mandalay.
Day 11: Ancient Capitals — Sagaing & Inwa
Day trip to Sagaing Hill, a center of Buddhist learning with 600+ monasteries and nunneries — climb to Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda for a panoramic view of the Irrawaddy. Ferry to Inwa (Ava), the island capital from 1364-1841. Explore by horse cart: Bagaya Monastery (teak), the leaning tower of Nanmyin, and the atmospheric Maha Aungmye Bonzan brick monastery. Overnight in Mandalay.
Day 12: Fly to Yangon — Bago Excursion
Flight to Yangon. Day trip to Bago (Pegu), an ancient Mon kingdom capital. Visit Shwemawdaw Pagoda (114 meters, taller than Shwedagon), the 55-meter Shwethalyaung Reclining Buddha from 994 AD, and the four giant Buddha images at Kyaik Pun Paya. Return to Yangon. Overnight in Yangon.
Day 13: Yangon — Farewell to the Golden Land
Morning visit to Scott Market for final shopping — Myanmar is famous for rubies, jade, lacquerware, and handwoven textiles. Afternoon at leisure. Evening: farewell dinner at a traditional Burmese restaurant with puppet show performance. Final visit to Shwedagon Pagoda under the stars. Overnight in Yangon.
Day 14: Depart Yangon
