Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Minca Mountain Retreat & Transfer to Trek Start

• 7:00 AM — Pickup from your Santa Marta hotel or hostel
• 7:45 AM — Scenic drive up the winding mountain road to Minca (650m elevation), the bohemian eco-village in the Sierra Nevada foothills
• 8:30 AM — Visit La Victoria Coffee Farm, one of Colombia’s oldest operating coffee plantations (founded 1892). Tour the organic coffee fields and learn the bean-to-cup process
• 10:00 AM — Hike to Pozo Azul, a series of natural swimming holes with cascading waterfalls and deep emerald pools — the perfect pre-trek refresh
• 11:30 AM — Brunch at an eco-lodge with panoramic valley views overlooking the Sierra Nevada mountains
• 12:30 PM — Drive to El Mamey (also known as Machete Pelao), the traditional starting point for the Lost City trek

• 10:00 AM — Cross the Buritaca River multiple times — the trail crisscrosses the crystal-clear river, with water typically knee-to-waist deep
• 12:00 PM — Lunch break at a jungle camp — fresh-caught river fish, rice, beans, and plantains
• 1:30 PM — Continue through increasingly dense primary forest. Guides point out howler monkeys, toucans, blue morpho butterflies, and medicinal plants
• 3:30 PM — Arrive at Camp 2 (Mumake or El Paraiso), the base camp before the final ascent to the Lost City. Cool off in the river

Day 3: The Lost City (Ciudad Perdida) — Summit & Return

• 6:00 AM — Begin the ascent up 1,200 ancient stone steps through misty jungle. The steps were built by the Tayrona civilization over 1,200 years ago
• 7:00 AM — REACH THE LOST CITY! Emerge from the jungle onto the first stone terraces. The city unfolds across a lush mountain ridge — over 200 circular stone platforms that once supported wooden houses for up to 8,000 people
• 7:30 AM — Full guided tour of Ciudad Perdida: explore ceremonial plazas, the main staircase, ancient stone carvings (petroglyphs), and the central terrace where Tayrona chiefs held court
• 9:00 AM — Special access meeting with a Kogi Mamo (spiritual elder) who explains the sacred significance of Teyuna (the indigenous name for Ciudad Perdida) and their ongoing spiritual connection to this place
• 10:00 AM — Free time for photography and quiet reflection at this extraordinary archaeological wonder
• 10:30 AM — Begin the descent back down the 1,200 steps

Day 4: Final Trek Out & Return to Santa Marta

• 6:00 AM — Final jungle breakfast
• 7:00 AM — Last 3-4 hour hike back to El Mamey. This final stretch is mostly downhill through farmland with beautiful valley vistas
• 10:30 AM — Arrive at El Mamey. Congratulations — you’ve completed the 44km trek!
• 11:00 AM — Celebration lunch at a local restaurant in El Mamey with cold drinks and traditional Colombian food
• 12:30 PM — Drive back to Santa Marta
• 2:00 PM — Arrive in Santa Marta. Tour concludes with hotel drop-off
