Day 1: Fly to Khartoum via Istanbul

Depart from your chosen international airport, flying via Istanbul to Khartoum. Day 2: Western Desert Crossing to Old Dongola — Christian Kingdom

Head northwards across the Western Desert toward Old Dongola (approximately 5 hours). Your route passes through the ancient caravan trails of Wadi Muqaddam, with acacia groves dotting the landscape. Stop at traditional desert “chai houses” for sweet Sudanese tea. Arrive at Old Dongola, the capital of the Christian Kingdom of Makuria that flourished for nearly 800 years. Explore the remarkable archaeological site: red-brick Coptic cathedrals with towering columns, a cruciform church with well-preserved wall paintings, Islamic-era domed tombs, and the massive Throne Hall. Visit a nearby Nubian village where families still live in traditional mud-brick homes painted in bright colors. Continue to the Nubian Rest House in Karima for a three-night stay at the foot of Jebel Barkal.

Day 3: Jebel Barkal — Temple of Amun & Royal Pyramids

Dedicate the full day to Jebel Barkal (UNESCO World Heritage), the sacred flat-topped mountain that dominates the landscape near Karima. The mountain was so spiritually significant that both Egyptian pharaohs and Kushite kings built temples here, believing it was the home of Amun, king of the gods. Day 5: Bayuda Desert Crossing — Volcanic Landscapes & Atbara

Enter the Bayuda Desert, a dramatic volcanic region bounded by the 4th and 6th Nile Cataracts, characterized by black basalt hills, golden sand plains, and dry riverbeds. Isolated camel and donkey caravans still roam this area, tended by Bisharin nomads whose way of life has changed little in centuries. Cross the Nile at Atbara, a historic railway town. Visit the Atbara Railway Museum, housed in a colonial-era station, showcasing Sudan’s railway heritage — once the largest railway network in Africa. Continue south through the desert toward Meroë. As you approach, the 40 pyramids of the Royal Necropolis emerge on the horizon. Check into the 3-star Meroë Tented Camp for a two-night stay, with the pyramids visible from your tent.

Day 6: Meroë Royal Necropolis — The Black Pharaohs’ Capital

Spend the full day immersed in the Kingdom of Meroë, capital of the Kushite Empire that produced a succession of warrior queens known as Kandakes. Visit the Royal Necropolis at sunrise when the golden light transforms the steep-sided pyramids into glowing beacons on the desert ridges. Explore burial chambers containing reliefs of royal ceremonies, battles, and offerings to Nubian gods. Then continue to the ruins of the Royal City — a vast archaeological complex where temples, palaces, and residential quarters reveal a sophisticated civilization that synthesized Egyptian, Greek, Roman, and African traditions. Day 7: Naga & Musawwarat Temples — Return to Khartoum

Depart Meroë and drive to two of Sudan’s most extraordinary archaeological sites. At Naga, visit the first-century Lion Temple dedicated to Apedemak, with its exquisite bas-relief images of the lion-headed god, Queen Amanitore, and King Natakamani. Explore the unique “Kiosk” — a Roman-style building decorated with Egyptian, Roman, and Greek artistic elements. See the Temple of Amun with its avenue of ram statues.
