Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Arrive Kochi — The Gateway to Kerala

Touch down at Cochin International Airport (COK), the world’s first fully solar-powered airport. Your driver meets you for transfer to Fort Kochi, a historic port where Arab, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch, and British traders have left their imprint over 600 years. Evening: watch the iconic Chinese fishing nets (Cheena Vala) silhouetted against the sunset — these cantilevered nets were introduced by traders from the court of Kublai Khan in the 14th century and are still operated by hand today. Walk through the spice-scented streets of Jew Town, past the 450-year-old Paradesi Synagogue and the Dutch Palace with its remarkable Ramayana murals. Welcome dinner of Kerala sadya — a traditional banana-leaf feast of 20+ vegetarian dishes. Overnight in Fort Kochi.

Day 2: Kochi to Munnar — Into the Tea Gardens

Morning: drive 4 hours east into the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s 8 “hottest hotspots” of biodiversity. The road climbs through rubber plantations, cardamom forests, and pepper vines. Munnar sits at 1,600m — a former British hill station where the cool climate and misty landscapes reminded colonials of home. Afternoon: visit the Tata Tea Museum, housed in a 100-year-old tea factory. Learn how the Nilgiri tea plant (Camellia sinensis) goes from leaf to cup, and taste freshly processed teas overlooking the plantations. Overnight in Munnar.

Day 3: Munnar — Tea, Mountains & Wildlife

Sunrise at Kolukkumalai — the world’s highest organic tea plantation at 2,400m. A 4×4 jeep takes you up a rugged trail past tea bushes clinging to near-vertical slopes. The sunrise over the Tamil Nadu plains 2km below is one of India’s most spectacular panoramas. Tour the 1930s factory that still uses the orthodox method of tea manufacture — original machinery driven by belts and pulleys, producing tea shipped to connoisseurs worldwide. Afternoon: Eravikulam National Park — 97 sq km of shola-grassland ecosystem, home to the endangered Nilgiri tahr (mountain goat found only here). These animals, with their curved horns and sure-footed grace, wander within meters of visitors. If visiting during January-April, the hillsides bloom with blue Neelakurinji flowers (last mass bloom 2018, next due 2030). Overnight in Munnar.

Day 4: Munnar to Alleppey — Houseboat Day!

Morning drive 4.5 hours down through the mountains to Alleppey (Alappuzha), the “Venice of the East.” At noon, board your private kettuvallam — a traditional Kerala houseboat crafted from anjili (wild jackfruit wood) and coir (coconut fiber), without a single nail. These boats were originally used to transport rice and spices along Kerala’s 900km of interconnected waterways. Now they’re floating hotels, and they drift through a world unchanged for centuries.

Your crew of three (captain, chef, and assistant) welcomes you aboard with tender coconut water. Cruise through narrow canals lined with coconut palms, past villages where life happens at water’s edge — women washing clothes on stone steps, children waving from wooden bridges, fishermen casting circular nets. The chef prepares fresh Kerala cuisine in the onboard kitchen: karimeen pollichathu (pearl spot fish wrapped in banana leaf and grilled), prawns moilee, and appam (rice pancakes) with vegetable stew. Anchor at dusk in a secluded backwater where the only sounds are birdsong and the lap of water. Sleep aboard under a canopy of stars. Overnight on the houseboat.

Day 5: Alleppey to Kumarakom — Bird Sanctuary & Ayurveda

Wake to the sound of temple bells across the water. Morning cruise back to Alleppey jetty after a traditional Kerala breakfast of puttu (steamed rice cake) and kadala curry. Drive 45 minutes to Kumarakom on the shores of Vembanad Lake — Kerala’s largest lake (96km long). Afternoon: visit the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, a 14-acre mangrove forest on the lake’s eastern shore. November to March, the sanctuary hosts winter migrants from as far as Siberia — pintail ducks, garganey teals, and the magnificent Siberian stork. Resident birds include cormorants, egrets, and the elusive Indian darter (snakebird) that swims with only its serpentine neck above water. Evening: traditional Ayurvedic massage (abhyanga) — two therapists working in synchronized rhythm with warm medicated oils, a 5,000-year-old healing tradition. Overnight at a lakeside heritage resort.

Day 6: Departure

Morning yoga session at sunrise overlooking the lake. Leisurely breakfast. Transfer to Cochin Airport (1.5 hours) for departure, with a stop at a spice plantation en route to stock up on Tellicherry black pepper, green cardamom, and freshly ground masala blends.
