Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Luanda — The City That Never Sleeps
Arrive at Quatro de Fevereiro International Airport. Angola is Africa’s seventh-largest country, emerging from decades of conflict to reveal extraordinary natural wonders. Transfer to your hotel on the Marginal (Luanda’s waterfront promenade). Afternoon: explore the Fortaleza de São Miguel (1576), a Portuguese fortress housing the Museum of the Armed Forces with panoramic views over Luanda Bay. Evening welcome dinner featuring moamba de galinha (Angola’s national dish — chicken stew with okra and palm oil). Overnight in Luanda.
Day 2: Luanda — Iron Palace & Slave Museum
Full day exploring Angola’s vibrant capital. Morning: visit the Palácio de Ferro (Iron Palace), a building attributed to Gustave Eiffel, shipped from France and assembled in Luanda in the 1890s. Explore Independence Square, the National Bank of Angola (a magnificent pink colonial building), and the lively street art scene. Visit the National Museum of Slavery (Museu da Escravatura), housed in a 17th-century chapel where enslaved people were baptized before being shipped to the Americas — over 3 million Angolans were taken during the transatlantic slave trade. Afternoon: drive along the Marginal to the Ilha de Luanda, a narrow sand spit with beach bars and seafood restaurants. Overnight in Luanda.
Day 3: Kalandula Falls — Africa’s Second Largest
Early departure for Kalandula Falls (360km from Luanda). The drive takes you through the changing landscapes of northern Angola — from coastal plains through savanna woodland. Arrive at Kalandula Falls, where the Lucala River plunges 105 meters over a 400-meter-wide horseshoe cliff — it’s Africa’s second-largest waterfall by volume after Victoria Falls, and yet sees only a few thousand visitors per year. Walk to the viewpoint and feel the spray from hundreds of meters away. Overnight at a simple lodge near the falls.
Day 4: Kalandula Falls Base & Pedras Negras
Morning hike to the base of Kalandula Falls — a challenging but spectacular descent. Swim in the pool at the bottom and watch rainbows form in the eternal mist. Afternoon: drive to Pedras Negras de Pungo Andongo, a series of massive black rock monoliths rising from the savanna like something from another planet. According to legend, these are the footprints of Queen Nzinga, the legendary 17th-century warrior queen who resisted Portuguese colonization. Climb to the top of one monolith for sunset views. Overnight in Malanje.
Day 5: Kwanza River & Return to Luanda
Morning visit to the Kwanza River rapids at Cacuso. The Kwanza River gave Angola its name and its currency — it’s the country’s lifeblood. Afternoon drive back to Luanda, stopping at local markets to see the vibrant Angolan textile trade. Evening: dinner at a churrascaria (Portuguese-Angolan grill restaurant). Overnight in Luanda.
Day 6: Mussulo Island & Beach Day
Full day at Mussulo Island, a 30km sand spit sheltering Luanda’s bay. Take a speedboat across the bay to this pristine beach paradise — white sand, calm turquoise water, and beachside seafood restaurants serving fresh-caught lobster and giant tiger prawns. Swim, snorkel, and relax. Afternoon: optional fishing trip or visit to a local fishing village. Overnight in Luanda.
Day 7: Miradouro da Lua & Cabo Ledo
Morning drive south to the Miradouro da Lua (Moon Viewpoint) — a stunning landscape of eroded cliffs with bands of color ranging from terracotta to cream, looking exactly like a lunar surface (hence the name). Continue to Cabo Ledo, one of Africa’s best-kept surfing secrets with consistent waves and a wild, undeveloped coastline. Visit the shipwreck on the beach, a rusting monument to the treacherous currents. Farewell dinner in Luanda’s finest restaurant with live kizomba music. Overnight in Luanda.
Day 8: Depart Angola
Morning visit to the Benfica Market for handicrafts. Transfer to airport.
