Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrive Luoyang
Welcome to Luoyang, capital of 13 dynasties spanning 1,500 years. Afternoon: visit the Luoyang Museum, with its stunning modern architecture housing Western Zhou bronzes, Tang Dynasty tri-color glazed pottery, and an extraordinary collection of Tang Dynasty tombstones. Continue to the White Horse Temple (Baimasi, 68 AD), China’s first Buddhist temple — built in honor of the white horses that carried Buddhist sutras from India. Visit the Tianzi Jialiu Museum, where 21 ancient imperial tombs of the Western Han Dynasty reveal tomb murals depicting court life. Evening try Luoyang’s signature dishes: Luoyang Shui Xian (water banquet), a multi-course soup-based banquet with origins in imperial kitchens. Overnight in Luoyang.
Day 2: Shaolin Temple & Mount Song Hiking
Drive 80km to Dengfeng for a full-day Shaolin experience. The Shaolin Temple (495 AD) has trained warrior monks for 1,500 years — most recently as commandos in WWII and current celebrity kung fu shows. Attend the morning kung fu training (meditation, stances, basic forms). Visit the Pagoda Forest with 246 brick pagodas from Tang to Qing Dynasty — the world’s largest collection of pagodas. Afternoon hike in Mount Song’s Shaoshi Mountain, the lesser peak. The trail passes the Second Temple of Shaolin (Chuzu’an), built by the Bodhidharma where he famously sat facing a wall for 9 years. Return to Luoyang. Overnight in Luoyang.
Day 3: Longmen Grottoes & Depart
Morning at the Longmen Grottoes — 1,500 years of Buddhist art carved into cliffs. Visit the massive Vairocana Buddha, completed 675 AD, a Tang masterpiece at 17.14m tall. The caves hold Buddhist scripture carvings from the Tang Dynasty that document trade along the Silk Road. Optional: visit the Guanlin Temple, the tomb of Guan Yu, the legendary general immortalized in “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” Afternoon departure.
