Daily Itinerary
Day 1: Steel Rigg, Housesteads & Vindolanda – The Heart of Hadrian’s Wall
Meet your guide in Newcastle or Carlisle in the morning. Journey into Northumberland National Park to the dramatic Steel Rigg viewpoint, where Hadrian’s Wall snakes along the Whin Sill escarpment. Embark on a moderate 2-3 hour guided walk along the most spectacular section of the Wall, crossing crags and passing the famous Sycamore Gap, the most photographed spot along the Wall and film star of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Visit Housesteads Roman Fort, Britain’s most complete Roman fort, where walls stand up to 10 feet high. Explore the barracks, hospital, commanding officer’s house, and remarkably, one of the best-preserved Roman communal toilets in existence. In the afternoon, explore Vindolanda Roman Fort and Museum, an active archaeological dig site famous for the Vindolanda writing tablets, Britain’s oldest surviving handwritten documents. Overnight in Hexham or a country inn near the Wall.
Day 2: Holy Island of Lindisfarne & Bamburgh Castle
After breakfast, drive along Northumberland’s stunning Heritage Coast to the causeway to Holy Island of Lindisfarne (tide permitting). This tidal island is one of Britain’s most magical destinations: the birthplace of English Christianity, where St Aidan founded a monastery in 635 AD and the magnificent Lindisfarne Gospels were created. Explore Lindisfarne Priory ruins, the 16th-century Lindisfarne Castle dramatically perched on a volcanic plug, and sample the island’s famous Lindisfarne Mead. Return to the mainland for lunch in the fishing village of Seahouses, then visit Bamburgh Castle, one of England’s most imposing fortresses dominating the coastline from its basalt crag. In the afternoon, enjoy a walk along the pristine Bamburgh Beach with views to the Farne Islands, home to one of Britain’s largest grey seal colonies and thousands of puffins (April-July). Return to Hexham via the quiet Northumberland lanes.
Day 3: Alnwick Castle, Corbridge & Farewell
This morning visit Alnwick Castle, the second-largest inhabited castle in England after Windsor and family seat of the Duke of Northumberland for over 700 years. Hogwarts film location, you will recognize the Outer Bailey from Harry Potter’s first flying lesson. Tour the magnificent State Rooms with their Italian Renaissance interiors, art collection, and the castle grounds designed by Capability Brown. After lunch, return to Hadrian’s Wall country with a visit to Corbridge Roman Town, once a bustling supply base and civilian settlement, with remarkably preserved granaries and a fascinating museum. End the tour at Hexham Abbey, one of England’s finest examples of Early English Gothic architecture with a Saxon crypt dating to 674 AD. Transfer back to Newcastle or Carlisle by 17:00 for onward connections.
