Daily Itinerary

Day 1: Manchester to Windermere & Hawkshead

Depart Manchester at 09:00, heading north through Lancashire into the Lake District National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Your first stop is the bustling lakeside town of Bowness-on-Windermere for a 45-minute cruise on Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake at 10.5 miles long. Glide past wooded islands and admire the fells rising from the water’s edge. Continue to the picture-perfect village of Hawkshead, where William Wordsworth attended grammar school, its whitewashed cottages and cobbled lanes virtually unchanged for centuries. Visit Beatrix Potter’s Gallery housed in her husband’s former solicitor’s office, showcasing her original artwork. Continue through the spectacular Kirkstone Pass to the adventure capital of Keswick, a charming market town nestled between Derwentwater and Skiddaw, for your three-night stay.

Day 2: Northern Fells, Honister Pass & Buttermere

After breakfast, drive to the Castlerigg Stone Circle, one of Britain’s oldest and most atmospheric stone circles dating back 5,000 years, dramatically set within a natural amphitheater of surrounding peaks. Continue through the stunning Borrowdale Valley to the foot of Honister Pass. Weather permitting, enjoy a gentle 2-hour guided fell walk (Catbells or Latrigg options) offering breathtaking panoramas over Derwentwater and the Northern Fells. After lunch, drive the dramatic Honister Pass, one of Cumbria’s highest mountain passes, past the Bowder Stone (a 2,000-tonne glacier erratic). Arrive at Buttermere, frequently voted England’s most beautiful lake, for a gentle lakeside walk between Buttermere and Crummock Water, with the iconic Honister and Haystacks peaks reflected in crystal-clear waters. Return to Keswick for the evening.

Day 3: Wordsworth’s Dove Cottage, Grasmere & Ullswater

Begin the day in Grasmere, the village William Wordsworth described as “the loveliest spot that man hath ever found.” Visit Dove Cottage, Wordsworth’s home from 1799-1808, where he composed his most famous poems including “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud.” Tour the cottage’s intimate rooms, preserved as they were in the poet’s day, and explore the garden he planted himself. Sample the famous Grasmere Gingerbread at Sarah Nelson’s shop (est. 1854). Continue to Ullswater, often considered the most beautiful of all the lakes, for a short walk along the shoreline to the impressive Aira Force Waterfall, a 65-foot cascade in ancient woodland. Visit the Wordsworth Museum at the Jerwood Centre before returning to Keswick via the quiet back roads of Matterdale.

Day 4: Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top, Ambleside & Return

Journey to Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey, Beatrix Potter’s beloved 17th-century farmhouse, left exactly as she lived in it and filled with her favorite things. Walk through the cottage garden that inspired illustrations in “The Tale of Tom Kitten” and “The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck.” Visit nearby Wray Castle, the mock-Gothic castle where Beatrix Potter first holidayed in the Lakes at age 16. Continue to Ambleside at the head of Windermere for free time to explore this vibrant town. Visit the famous Bridge House, a tiny 17th-century cottage built over a stream. Depart the Lake District mid-afternoon, arriving back at Manchester approximately 18:00.
