Itinerary

Day 1: Medan – Berastagi – Mount Sibayak Sunset (D)

Arrive at Kualanamu Airport in Medan and begin the ascent into the Karo Highlands. After a 3-hour drive through lush volcanic landscapes, arrive in the cool mountain town of Berastagi, situated at 1,300 meters between the active Sibayak and Sinabung volcanoes. Explore the lively Berastagi Fruit and Flower Market where farmers from the Karo highlands sell their famously sweet passion fruit, strawberries, marigolds, and exotic tropical fruits. Late afternoon, take a 2-hour hike up Mount Sibayak (2,094m) to witness the sunset from its steaming crater rim, where sulfur fumaroles hiss and yellow crystals coat the volcanic rocks. Panoramic views extend across the Karo plateau to Lake Toba. Descend and enjoy a traditional Batak Karo dinner. Overnight in Berastagi.

Day 2: Sipiso-piso Waterfall – Lake Toba – Samosir Island (B, L)

After breakfast, drive to the Sipiso-piso Waterfall, a dramatic 120-meter single-drop waterfall crashing from the northern rim of the Lake Toba caldera. Descend the staircase to the base for an unforgettable perspective looking up at water plunging from the volcanic plateau. Continue to Tongging and Merek Hills for jaw-dropping panoramic views of the entire Lake Toba caldera — at 100km long and 30km wide, the sheer scale is difficult to comprehend. Day 3: Samosir Island – Batak Cultural Immersion (B, L)

A full day exploring Samosir Island’s rich Batak Toba heritage. Visit Tomok, where the ancient stone sarcophagus of King Sidabutar dates back centuries, guarded by traditional Batak houses (Rumah Bolon) with their iconic boat-shaped roofs decorated with water buffalo horns. Continue to Ambarita Stone Chair Village where the Batak kings once held council and conducted ceremonies, with stone-carved seats still arranged in traditional formation. After lunch, visit Simanindo Museum for the captivating Sigale-gale puppet dance performance. Day 4: Lake Toba – Drive to Padang Highlands (B, L)

Early breakfast, then farewell to Lake Toba. Take the morning ferry back to Parapat. Begin the spectacular cross-island drive south through the Bukit Barisan mountain range that forms Sumatra’s spine. The route winds through dense tropical forests, terraced rice paddies, and traditional villages. Stop at scenic viewpoints and local markets along the way. Cross into West Sumatra province, where the landscape transforms into dramatic gorges and limestone cliffs. Arrive in the Padang Highlands region by evening. Check into your hotel and enjoy a welcome dinner featuring the world-famous Padang cuisine (Masakan Padang) — Rendang, Gulai, and Ayam Pop. Overnight in Bukittinggi or Padang Panjang area.

Day 5: Harau Valley – The Yosemite of Indonesia (B, L)

After breakfast, journey to the spectacular Harau Valley (Lembah Harau), often called the Yosemite of Indonesia. Towering sandstone cliffs rise 150-500 meters vertically from emerald green rice paddies, creating one of Southeast Asia’s most dramatic landscapes. Trek into the valley, passing through local villages where farmers work the fields against this stunning natural backdrop. Visit multiple waterfalls including Sarasah Bunta and Akbar Erray, where you can swim in natural pools beneath the cascades. Rock climbers will marvel at the cliffs that offer some of Indonesia’s best climbing routes. Explore butterfly gardens and orchid conservation areas. Enjoy a traditional Minangkabau lunch in the valley. Return to your highlands accommodation. Overnight near Bukittinggi.

Day 6: Minangkabau Highlands – Padang Departure (B)

Morning visit to the iconic Jam Gadang (Clock Tower) in downtown Bukittinggi, the symbol of Minangkabau culture, then explore Pasar Atas (Upper Market) for handicrafts and local snacks. Drive through the Anai Valley, passing the spectacular Anai Valley Waterfall and forests filled with wild monkeys. Visit a traditional Minangkabau Rumah Gadang (Big House) with its distinctive sweeping buffalo-horn roof architecture. Transfer to Minangkabau International Airport (PDG) in Padang for your departure flight. If time permits, stop at Pantai Air Manis (Air Manis Beach) to see the legendary Malin Kundang stone before your flight.
