Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Addis Ababa to Gondar — Gateway to the Simiens

Morning flight from Addis Ababa to Gondar (approximately 1 hour). Meet your Extraordinary Ethiopia Tours guide and trekking team at Gondar Airport. Transfer to Debark (approximately 2 hours), the gateway town to Simien Mountains National Park. Complete park formalities and meet your support team: cook, mule handlers, scout (armed park ranger), and guide. Begin trekking from Debark into the park. The first section is a gentle ascent through cultivated highlands with traditional stone farmhouses and terraced barley fields. After approximately 3 hours of hiking, pass through the park boundary. The landscape transforms dramatically as you enter the Simien massif — the escarpment edge reveals stunning views dropping over 1,000 meters into the lowlands, with vultures and eagles riding thermals at eye level. Arrive at Sankaber camp (3,250m). Your crew has set up camp, hot water is ready, and dinner is being prepared. The campsite at Sankaber is a broad ridge offering first encounters with gelada baboons — troops of these endemic primates graze peacefully around camp, their distinctive red chest patches, golden manes, and expressive faces making them unforgettable. As darkness falls, the milky way appears in astonishing clarity at this altitude. Overnight: camping at Sankaber. Trekking: 3-4 hours, 7 km, moderate.

Day 2: Sankaber to Geech — The Great Escarpment

Today features some of the most dramatic scenery in Africa. After breakfast, begin the trek along the escarpment edge. The trail follows the rim of a breathtaking gorge, with views across the lowlands stretching to Eritrea on clear days. The panoramas are immense — tier after tier of cliffs descending into haze, with the Jinbar River a silver ribbon thousands of meters below. Morning: reach the Jinbar Waterfall, a spectacular cascade plunging over the escarpment into the abyss. The wind often catches the water, sending spray hundreds of meters upward. Continue along the escarpment through Afro-alpine meadows scattered with giant lobelia, their palm-like rosettes standing 3-4 meters tall, and tree heather forests draped in old man’s beard lichen. The altitude ranges between 3,300-3,600 meters. Watch for walia ibex — these magnificent wild goats with massive backward-curving horns navigate the near-vertical cliffs with astonishing agility. They are endemic to the Simien Mountains and found nowhere else on Earth. Lammergeiers (bearded vultures) with wingspans up to 3 meters soar past, occasionally dropping bones onto rocks to access marrow. Arrive at Geech camp (3,600m) in the afternoon. Set at the base of a broad valley beneath Geech Abyss, this is one of the park’s most scenic campsites. Optional: afternoon hike to the nearby Kedadit viewpoint for sunset over the escarpment. Overnight: camping at Geech. Trekking: 5-6 hours, 12 km, moderate with some steep sections.

Day 3: Geech to Chennek — Imet Gogo Summit & Wildlife Encounters

The most spectacular day of the trek. Pre-dawn departure (optional) to Imet Gogo summit (3,926m) for sunrise — widely considered one of Africa’s finest panoramic viewpoints. As the sun rises, it illuminates the entire Simien massif: endless waves of mountains, the deep gorges of the Ansiya and Jinbar rivers, and the plug-like volcanic formations called “the chess pieces of the gods” rising from the valley floor. The 360-degree panorama is simply breathtaking, with views extending over 100 kilometers on clear mornings. Morning: descend from Imet Gogo and continue east along the escarpment. The trail undulates between 3,600-3,900 meters. This is the best region for Ethiopian wolf sightings — Africa’s rarest canid and the most endangered carnivore on the continent. Fewer than 500 Ethiopian wolves survive, all in the Ethiopian highlands. Watch for these elegant red-coated predators hunting giant mole-rats in the open grasslands. The wolves are solitary hunters, using their long snouts and acute hearing to locate prey underground. Afternoon: descend to the Chennek area (3,620m), the best location for walia ibex viewing. These magnificent wild goats often graze on the cliffs near camp, especially in the late afternoon. Male walia ibex have spectacular ridged horns that can reach over 1 meter in length. The Chennek campsite sits in a dramatic valley beneath Imet Gogo, surrounded by towering cliffs. Evening: campfire under the stars (where permitted), sharing stories with your crew. Overnight: camping at Chennek. Trekking: 7-8 hours, 15 km, challenging with significant altitude.

Day 4: Chennek to Gondar — Descent & Return

Final morning in the Simien Mountains. After breakfast, enjoy one last wildlife-viewing session — the gelada baboons at Chennek are particularly habituated and allow close observation of their complex social behavior. Watch grooming sessions, juvenile play, and the dominant males with their impressive golden manes. These primates live in complex multi-level societies — the largest social groups of any non-human primate. Begin the descent through different vegetation zones: from Afro-alpine moorland through giant heather forest (Erica arborea growing to 6 meters tall) into cultivated highlands. The descent offers different perspectives of the escarpment as you look back toward the peaks. After approximately 3-4 hours, reach the park boundary. Your vehicle awaits for the drive back to Gondar (approximately 2 hours). In Gondar, celebrate your achievement with a hot shower and comfortable hotel. Evening: well-deserved dinner at a traditional Gondar restaurant. If your tour coincides with weekend, the city’s traditional azmari music houses (similar to Ethiopian jazz clubs) offer authentic entertainment with improvised lyrics and traditional instruments. Overnight: hotel in Gondar. Trekking: 3-4 hours descending, 10 km.

Day 5: Gondar to Addis Ababa — Departure

Morning at leisure in Gondar. If time permits before your flight, visit the Royal Enclosure (Fasil Ghebbi), Gondar’s UNESCO World Heritage castle complex — a spectacular complement to your mountain adventure. The 17th-century castles display a unique fusion of Ethiopian, Portuguese, Indian, and Arab architectural styles. Alternatively, visit Debre Berhan Selassie Church with its famous ceiling of 104 angel faces. Transfer to Gondar Airport for the flight to Addis Ababa. On arrival, connect with your international departure flight, carrying memories of the Roof of Africa: gelada baboons grazing at dawn, walia ibex on improbable cliffs, lammergeiers soaring past the escarpment edge, and star-filled nights in one of Africa’s most spectacular mountain wildernesses.
