Itinerary
Days 1-2: Addis Ababa — Bahir Dar — Lake Tana
Arrive Addis Ababa. Day 1: National Museum (Lucy), Entoto Mountain, Merkato — Africa’s largest open-air market. Day 2: fly to Bahir Dar. Boat cruise on Lake Tana to 14th-century island monasteries — Ura Kidane Mehret with its brilliant frescoes, Azwa Maryam with illuminated manuscripts. Afternoon: Blue Nile Falls (Tis Issat), the “Smoking Water” cascading 45 meters into a misty gorge. Overnights: Addis Ababa, Bahir Dar. (B, D — Day 1; B — Day 2)
Day 3: Gondar — African Camelot
Drive to Gondar. Explore the Royal Enclosure — the 17th-century castles of Emperor Fasilides and successors, a unique African-European fusion. Debre Birhan Selassie Church: the mesmerizing ceiling of 135 winged angel faces, one of the most beautiful churches in Ethiopia. Sunset at Fasilides’ Bath, still used for the Timkat festival. Overnight in Gondar. (B)
Days 4-5: Simien Mountains — Trekking the Roof of Africa
Two days in the Simien Mountains National Park (UNESCO). Trek from Sankaber to Gich along the escarpment: gelada baboons, lammergeier vultures, giant lobelia forests, and views across canyons that drop a vertical kilometer. Scan for the rare walia ibex. Simple mountain camps, campfire meals, and some of Africa’s most dramatic trekking. Return to Gondar. Overnights: Sankaber camp (Day 4), Gondar (Day 5). (B, L, D — Day 4; B, L — Day 5)
Days 6-7: Lalibela — The New Jerusalem
Fly to Lalibela. Two days exploring the 11 rock-hewn churches carved from solid volcanic rock in the 12th century. Northern Group: Bet Medhane Alem (world’s largest monolithic church), Bet Maryam, Bet Golgotha. Southern Group: Bet Giyorgis — the cross-shaped masterpiece. Time for second visits at different times of day (the light changes dramatically) and attending an Ethiopian Orthodox service. Overnight in Lalibela. (B)
Days 8-10: Danakil Depression — Erta Ale & Dallol
Fly to Semera, then three days in the Danakil Depression. Evening hike to Erta Ale’s crater rim to witness the permanent lava lake — one of only six on Earth. Sleep under the stars at the crater rim. Day 9: sunrise at Erta Ale, drive across the desert to Hamad Ela. Day 10: pre-dawn drive to Dallol — neon colors at Earth’s lowest inhabited point (130m below sea level). Lake Assale salt flats with Afar miners and camel caravans. Return to Semera, fly to Addis. This is the most extreme and unforgettable segment of the journey. Overnights: Erta Ale crater rim, Hamad Ela, Addis Ababa. (B, L, D)
Days 11-14: Omo Valley — Tribes of the South
Fly south to Arba Minch. Four days in the legendary Omo Valley. Lake Chamo boat safari: 6-meter Nile crocodiles. Drive to Turmi via Konso UNESCO terraces. Hamer bull-jumping ceremony, Karo body painting on Omo River cliffs, Mursi lip-plate villages, Dassanech across the Omo River by dugout canoe. Key Afer Thursday market if timing permits — one of Africa’s most colorful tribal gatherings. Dorze “elephant trunk” houses and weaving traditions. This is not tourism — it is cultural exchange with communities preserving extraordinary traditions. Overnights: Arba Minch, Turmi, Jinka. (B, L)
Day 15: Return to Addis Ababa — Departure
Fly to Addis Ababa. Day room, last-minute exploration or shopping for Ethiopian coffee, textiles, and handicrafts. Farewell coffee ceremony. Transfer to Bole International Airport. You’ve traversed Ethiopia from its volcanic depths to its cultural heights — a journey encompassing the full spectrum of human experience in one of Africa’s most extraordinary countries. (B)
