Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrival in Belgrade — Welcome to Serbia
Arrive at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. Transfer to your 4-star hotel in central Belgrade. After settling in, enjoy an orientation tour of the city center. Walk Knez Mihailova Street, Belgrade’s lively pedestrian boulevard connecting Republic Square to Kalemegdan Park, with its boutiques, galleries, and street performers. Visit Republic Square with the National Museum and the National Theatre. Continue to the Bohemian quarter of Skadarlija, Belgrade’s Montmartre, where cobblestoned streets host traditional kafanas with live music. Evening: welcome dinner with rakija tasting in Skadarlija. Overnight in Belgrade.
Day 2: Manasija Monastery & Veliki Buk Waterfall
Morning: drive south from Belgrade (approximately 2 hours) through the Resava River valley to Manasija Monastery, one of Serbia’s most significant medieval monuments. Built between 1406 and 1418 by Despot Stefan Lazarević, this fortified monastery is enclosed by massive walls with 11 defensive towers — a true fortress-monastery reflecting Serbia’s need to defend against Ottoman expansion. The monastery’s Church of the Holy Trinity houses some of the finest surviving frescoes of the Morava school, including portraits of Despot Stefan and the monastery’s founders. The frescoes’ vivid colors and intricate detail are among the best-preserved in Serbia. Continue to Veliki Buk Waterfall, a stunning 20-meter cascade on the Resava River flowing over travertine terraces. The waterfall is surrounded by lush forest and a protected natural monument site. Optional: short hike to the upper cascades. Evening return to Belgrade. Overnight in Belgrade.
Day 3: Belgrade — Fortress, Temple & Royal History
Morning: comprehensive tour of Kalemegdan Fortress and Park. This fortress at the Sava-Danube confluence has guarded the city since Celtic times (3rd century BC). Explore the Upper Town (Gornji Grad) with the Victor Monument, the Despot’s Tower, and the Roman Well. Visit the Lower Town (Donji Grad) with the Nebojša Tower, once a notorious Ottoman prison. Then visit St. Sava Temple, the monumental Orthodox cathedral. Its crypt is decorated with breathtaking gold mosaics, and the ongoing interior decoration is considered one of the great art projects of the 21st century. Afternoon: visit the Royal Compound in the exclusive Dedinje neighborhood — the Royal Palace and White Palace built between the wars by King Alexander I Karadjordjević. Alternatively, visit the Museum of Yugoslavia and the House of Flowers, Tito’s final resting place. Evening at leisure. Overnight in Belgrade.
Day 4: Golubac Fortress & Iron Gates Scenic Drive
Day excursion east along the Danube to the Iron Gates. First stop: Golubac Fortress, a magnificent 14th-century castle strategically positioned at the entrance to the Djerdap Gorge. Nine towers and a massive defensive wall march down to the Danube’s edge. Explore the newly restored Palace Tower (with interactive multimedia exhibition), Hat Tower, and the inner fortress courtyards — recently fully opened after a major EU-funded restoration. Continue driving along the Danube through the Iron Gates, one of Europe’s most spectacular river gorges forming the border between Serbia and Romania. Stop at viewpoints overlooking the widest and narrowest points of the Danube. See the Trajan’s Tablet (Tabula Traiana), a Roman monument carved into the rock face by Emperor Trajan in 100 AD to commemorate his construction of the bridge across the Danube. Optional: visit Lepenski Vir, the 8,000-year-old Mesolithic archaeological site that is one of Europe’s oldest planned settlements with remarkable fish-deity stone sculptures. Return to Belgrade in the evening. Overnight in Belgrade.
Day 5: Sargan Eight Railway & Drvengrad (Mokra Gora)
Morning departure from Belgrade to Mokra Gora (approximately 3.5 hours) in the mountains of western Serbia. Board the legendary Sargan Eight (Šarganska Osmica) narrow-gauge railway. This UNESCO-nominated engineering masterpiece from the 1920s uses a unique figure-eight track to climb 300 meters over just 15.4 kilometers, passing through 22 tunnels and over 5 bridges. The restored vintage 1927 steam locomotive (or heritage diesel) hauls restored wooden passenger cars through some of Serbia’s most beautiful mountain scenery. After the 2.5-hour ride, visit Drvengrad (Küstendorf), the ethno-village created by acclaimed film director Emir Kusturica. Wander streets named after global icons — Nikola Tesla, Che Guevara, Diego Maradona, Novak Djokovic — and visit the Stanley Kubrick Cinema. The village’s wooden architecture represents traditional Serbian mountain building techniques. Return to Belgrade in the evening. Overnight in Belgrade.
Day 6: Novi Sad & Sremski Karlovci — Habsburg Elegance & Wine
Morning drive to Novi Sad (approximately 1.5 hours), the capital of Vojvodina and a 2022 European Capital of Culture. Tour Petrovaradin Fortress on the Danube, the 18th-century Austro-Hungarian stronghold. Walk the underground military galleries (“katakombe”), visit the iconic Clock Tower, and enjoy river panoramas. Explore the pedestrian center: Liberty Square, the City Hall, Name of Mary Church. Afternoon: short drive to Sremski Karlovci, the Baroque town at the foot of Fruska Gora. Visit the Theological Seminary and the Patriarchal Palace. The highlight: wine tasting at a historic wine cellar. Sremski Karlovci’s winemaking tradition dates to Roman times. Day 7: Belgrade Departure
Morning at leisure. Stroll the Kalemegdan Park one last time, shop for souvenirs on Knez Mihailova, or visit the charming Zemun district with its riverside cafés. Transfer to Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport for departure, carrying memories of Serbia’s majestic monasteries, dramatic gorges, scenic railways, and legendary wines.
