Itinerary Highlights
Day 1: Arrival in Belgrade
Arrive at Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport. Transfer to your hotel in central Belgrade. After settling in, your guide provides a comprehensive tour briefing and bike fitting to ensure your bicycle is perfectly adjusted for the week ahead. The evening begins with a gentle walking tour to stretch your legs after travel. Walk Knez Mihailova Street and visit Skadarlija, Belgrade’s bohemian quarter. Welcome dinner at a traditional kafana with live music — the perfect introduction to Serbian cuisine and culture. Overnight in Belgrade.
Day 2: Belgrade to Novi Sad via Danube Cycle Path (55 km)
After breakfast, your cycling adventure begins. Ride from Belgrade along the Danube River on the EuroVelo 6 cycle route, which connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Black Sea across 10 European countries. The first section follows the Danube’s left bank north through the Vojvodina plain, with the river on your right and agricultural landscapes on your left. Pedal past small riverside villages, willow groves, and poplar forests. Stop at Stari Slankamen for a break, an ancient settlement at the confluence of the Tisa and Danube rivers overlooking the river junction. The terrain is predominantly flat, making your first cycling day an enjoyable warm-up. The support vehicle follows at all times so you can ride sections in the van if preferred. Enter Novi Sad across the Varadin Bridge with stunning views of Petrovaradin Fortress. Check into your hotel. Evening: walk through Novi Sad’s pedestrian center to Liberty Square. Overnight in Novi Sad. Cycling: 55 km, flat terrain, approximately 3-4 hours riding time.
Day 3: Fruska Gora National Park — Monasteries & Vineyards Loop (45 km)
Today you explore the “Jewel of Serbia” — Fruska Gora National Park, an isolated mountain ridge rising from the Pannonian plain west of Novi Sad. Often called the “Mount Athos of Serbia,” Fruska Gora was home to 35 monasteries during the medieval period, of which 16 remain active today. This is a moderately challenging cycling day with gentle climbs through the forested slopes of the national park. The first ascent brings you to the viewpoint above the Danube, with views across the Vojvodina plain. Ride through forested roads shaded by centuries-old lime, oak, and beech trees. Stop at Krusedol Monastery, founded in 1509, with its beautiful baroque iconostasis and peaceful courtyard. Continue cycling past orchards of apricots, plums, and the renowned Fruska Gora vineyards. Stop at a family winery for a tasting of local wines, including the famous Bermet dessert wine. Descend to Sremski Karlovci, the Baroque gem of Vojvodina. Park your bikes and explore the town on foot: the Patriarchal Palace, the Orthodox Cathedral, the first Serbian Grammar School (1791), and the Chapel of Peace. The support vehicle is always nearby, allowing you to cycle at your own pace. Return to Novi Sad for the evening. Cycling: 45 km, rolling hills, approximately 3-4 hours riding time with stops. Overnight in Novi Sad.
Day 4: Danube Cycle Route to Iron Gates Region (60 km + transfer)
Morning: ride a scenic section of the Danube cycle route east of Novi Sad, following the river through riverside villages and forests. This section passes through the authentic Vojvodina countryside with its flat agricultural landscape, colorful houses with traditional facades, and church spires punctuating the horizon. After approximately 40 km of cycling, meet the support vehicle for lunch and a scenic transfer eastward (approximately 2.5 hours), entering the dramatic landscape of eastern Serbia where the Danube cuts through the Carpathian Mountains. The afternoon cycling section begins near Golubac Fortress, the magnificent 14th-century castle standing guard at the canyon entrance. Ride a scenic section along the entry to the Iron Gates, with the fortress as your backdrop and the Danube widening before the gorge narrows. The road hugs the riverbank, offering ever-changing perspectives of this evolving landscape. Check into your hotel in the Djerdap region. Evening: traditional Danube fish dinner at a riverside restaurant. Cycling: 60 km (40 km morning + 20 km afternoon), mostly flat with one short scenic climb near Golubac. Overnight in the Djerdap region.
Day 5: Iron Gates Gorge Cycling — Djerdap’s Greatest Views (50 km)
Today is the scenic highlight of the cycling tour — a ride through the Djerdap Gorge, the Iron Gates, Europe’s longest and deepest river gorge. The route follows the Djerdap Highway along the Danube’s Serbian bank, with the Carpathian Mountains of Romania rising dramatically on the opposite shore. Stop at the viewpoint over Veliki Kazan (The Great Cauldron), where the Danube narrows to just 150 meters between 300-meter-high cliffs. Visit the Trajan’s Tablet (Tabula Traiana), carved into the rock face 1,900 years ago by Roman engineers. Continue to the Lepenski Vir archaeological site, an 8,000-year-old Mesolithic settlement — park your bikes and explore the remarkable museum built over the original excavation site, home to the famous fish-god stone sculptures that represent some of Europe’s oldest monumental art. The afternoon ride continues through the gorge to viewpoints revealing the Danube’s spectacular passage through mountains. The support vehicle is always nearby for tired legs, photo stops, and refreshments. Arrive at Donji Milanovac in the afternoon. Optional: short hike to the Kovilovo viewpoint for a bird’s-eye view over the Danube. Cycling: 50 km, rolling with some moderate climbs, approximately 4-5 hours riding time with cultural stops. Overnight in the Djerdap region.
Day 6: Djerdap to Belgrade — Final Ride & Transfer (35 km + transfer)
Morning: one final ride through the upper Djerdap National Park. The route passes through tunnels carved through rock, offering dramatic glimpses of the Danube emerging around corners. Ride to the Kapetan Mišin breg viewpoint for a final spectacular panorama over the gorge. After approximately 35 km of cycling, meet the support vehicle. Enjoy a farewell lunch in the Djerdap region featuring local specialties — grilled river fish, ajvar, prebranac (baked beans), and local wines. Then transfer back to Belgrade (approximately 3 hours), allowing you to rest after your cycling achievements. Arrive in Belgrade by late afternoon. Check into your hotel. Evening at leisure to enjoy Belgrade’s vibrant nightlife, floating river clubs (splavovi), or a quiet dinner. Celebrate completing the most challenging and rewarding sections of the cycling tour. Overnight in Belgrade.
Day 7: Belgrade — Recovery Day, Culture & Celebration
A well-deserved rest day to explore Belgrade on foot. Morning: guided walking tour covering Kalemegdan Fortress at the Sava-Danube confluence, the Victor Monument, and the Roman Well. Visit St. Sava Temple, the monumental Orthodox cathedral with its extraordinary gold mosaic interior. Walk the elegant streets of Vračar. Afternoon: explore Belgrade at your leisure. Visit the Museum of Yugoslavia and the House of Flowers, Tito’s mausoleum, for insight into 20th-century history. Alternatively, explore the creative Savamala district or relax at Beton Hala with Danube views. Evening: farewell celebration dinner at a top Belgrade restaurant, raising a glass of rakija to your cycling adventure through Serbia. Overnight in Belgrade.
Day 8: Belgrade Departure
After a final Serbian breakfast, enjoy free time for last exploration or souvenir shopping. Transfer to Belgrade Nikola Tesla Airport for your departure flight, leaving with cycling medals (figurative and literal), memories of the Danube’s magnificent passage through the Iron Gates, the monastery-studded forests of Fruska Gora, and the warmest hospitality of Serbia.
