Itinerary Highlights

Day 1: Darwin to Mary River via Litchfield National Park

Depart Darwin and head south to Litchfield National Park, a 1,500 sq km wonderland of monsoon rainforest, magnetic termite mounds, and plunge pools. Walk the Wangi Falls Loop — two waterfalls cascading into a large swimming hole surrounded by monsoon forest. Continue to Florence Falls, a 212-step descent (with a viewing platform option) to twin waterfalls plunging into a deep, crystal-clear pool perfect for a refreshing swim. Picnic lunch by the falls. Visit the Magnetic Termite Mounds — an extraordinary field of 2-metre high, tombstone-shaped mounds aligned precisely north-south for temperature regulation. Stop at Lambells Lagoon for the Pudakul Aboriginal Ecological Experience: a local Indigenous guide demonstrates traditional uses of plants, bush foods, didgeridoo playing, and weaving. Overnight at Mary River bush camp.

Day 2: Kakadu National Park — Ancient Rock Art & Crocodiles

Enter Kakadu National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site covering 20,000 sq km — one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited landscapes, with evidence of Aboriginal occupation dating back 65,000 years. Morning: walk to Ubirr Rock, one of Kakadu’s most important art sites. The galleries here feature paintings of barramundi, goannas, and the Rainbow Serpent, some dating back 20,000 years. Climb the lookout for a 360-degree view over the Nadab floodplain, wetlands, and the Arnhem Land escarpment — one of the most photographed vistas in Australia. Afternoon: visit Cahills Crossing, where saltwater crocodiles gather in the East Alligator River to feed on mullet running the tidal crossing. Walk to Burrungkuy (Nourlangie Rock) — another major rock art site featuring the Creation Ancestor Namarrgon (Lightning Man). Overnight at a bush camp in Kakadu.

Day 3: Kakadu to Katherine — Yellow Water & Edith Falls

Optional early morning: Yellow Water Billabong cruise (extra cost) — a 2-hour Indigenous-owned boat trip through Kakadu’s most famous wetland. Spot crocodiles (both freshwater and estuarine), jabiru, brolgas, sea eagles, and thousands of magpie geese. The reflections of pandanus and paperbark trees in the still water create a photographer’s paradise. After the cruise, drive south through Pine Creek, a historic gold-mining town. Arrive at Nitmiluk National Park and walk the Leliyn (Edith Falls) Upper Circuit — a 2.6km loop leading to the upper pools and lookout, with time for a swim in the pristine rock pools at the base of the falls. Overnight near Katherine.

Day 4: Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge — Return to Darwin

Morning at Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge — a series of 13 sandstone gorges carved by the Katherine River over 23 million years. The gorge walls rise 70 metres above the river, painted with the red and orange hues of Jawoyn country. Choose between a 2-hour boat cruise through the first two gorges (with an Indigenous cultural commentary) or a guided walk along the gorge rim with spectacular views. After the gorge, visit the Katherine Hot Springs — a natural thermal pool on the banks of the Katherine River, fed by a spring at a constant 32 degrees Celsius. Relax in the crystal-clear, mineral-rich waters shaded by pandanus and paperbarks. Afternoon drive back to Darwin (approximately 3.5 hours), arriving by early evening.
