Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival via Raiatea & Overwater Welcome
Fly from Tahiti to Raiatea (approximately 45 minutes). Your driver meets you at Raiatea Airport and transfers you 20 minutes to Uturoa Wharf, where the resort’s private boat crosses the lagoon to Tahaa in approximately 40 minutes. The crossing itself is a journey: the twin peaks of Tahaa rise ahead, Raiatea’s Mount Tapioi drops behind, and the lagoon shimmers in every shade of blue. Check into your overwater suite at Le Tahaa by Pearl Resorts — each suite features a glass floor panel, private deck, and direct lagoon access. Spend the afternoon swimming from your deck and acclimating to the island’s unhurried rhythm. Sunset drinks at the resort’s overwater bar, watching the sky perform.
Day 2: Vanilla Plantation, Pearl Farm & Island Exploration
After breakfast, visit a family-operated vanilla plantation where you’ll learn the full cultivation process — from hand-pollinating each orchid flower (a technique discovered by a 12-year-old enslaved boy on Réunion Island in 1841) to the nine-month curing process that transforms green beans into aromatic black vanilla pods. The plantation’s drying shed fills the air with the sweet, complex scent that defines Tahaa. Day 3: Coral Garden Drift Snorkel & Motu Exploration
This is the day you’ll talk about for years. After breakfast, your boat takes you to the Coral Garden (Jardin de Corail) in the shallow channel between Motu Tautau and Motu Mahaea. The current here creates a natural drift snorkel — you enter at one end and let the water carry you over acres of spectacular coral formations. Giant clams with iridescent mantles, schools of neon-blue chromis, parrotfish, angelfish, and the occasional eagle ray make this one of French Polynesia’s most extraordinary snorkeling experiences. You can drift through multiple times, each passage revealing something new. After lunch on the resort’s motu, spend the afternoon kayaking or paddleboarding through the lagoon’s shallows to uninhabited sand islets. The water depth rarely exceeds waist height in these areas.
Day 4: Raiatea Day Trip — Taputapuatea Marae & Mount Tapioi
Take the resort’s shuttle boat across the lagoon to Raiatea, the ‘Sacred Island’ of ancient Polynesia. Visit Taputapuatea Marae, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was once the most important religious and political center in Eastern Polynesia. This sprawling stone temple complex dating from 1000 AD served as the headquarters for Polynesian navigators who colonized Hawaii, Easter Island, and New Zealand. The sense of history among the moss-covered stones is palpable. Next, for the adventurous: hike Mount Tapioi (294 meters) from Uturoa town. The 45-minute climb rewards with panoramic views over both Tahaa and Raiatea’s shared lagoon, plus Huahine visible on the horizon. Lunch at a waterfront restaurant in Uturoa before the afternoon boat back to Tahaa. Farewell dinner at the resort’s fine dining restaurant featuring vanilla-infused cuisine.
Day 5: Departure
After a final overwater breakfast, the resort boat transfers you back to Raiatea. Your driver meets you at Uturoa Wharf for the short transfer to Raiatea Airport and your flight to Tahiti. As Tahaa’s vanilla-scented shores recede, you’ll be planning your return to this secret island before the plane reaches cruising altitude.

Best Time to Visit
