Itinerary

Day 1: Santiago to Easter Island

Depart Santiago on a morning flight to Mataveri International Airport, the most remote airport in the world. Upon arrival, you will be greeted with traditional flower leis and transferred to your hotel in Hanga Roa, the island’s only town. After settling in, take an afternoon orientation walk through Hanga Roa to get acquainted with the island’s laid-back Polynesian atmosphere. Visit the small but informative local museum to learn about Rapa Nui history and culture. Evening welcome dinner featuring fresh Pacific seafood at a waterfront restaurant.

Day 2: Archaeological Wonders — Ahu Akivi & Ahu Tahai

Begin your archaeological journey with a visit to Ahu Akivi, a unique platform where seven moai face the ocean rather than inland — the only moai on the island positioned to look out to sea. According to legend, these seven statues represent the original explorers sent by King Hotu Matua to scout the island. Continue to Puna Pau, the topknot quarry where the red scoria pukao headpieces were carved. In the afternoon, explore the Ahu Tahai complex, which features three platforms with restored moai standing in a row. Stay until sunset to witness one of the most iconic views on Easter Island — the moai silhouetted against a blazing Pacific sunset, with waves crashing at their feet.

Day 3: Rano Raraku Quarry & Ahu Tongariki Sunrise

Rise early for the highlight of your Easter Island experience — sunrise at Ahu Tongariki, the largest ahu on the island with 15 massive moai standing in a dramatic line. As the sun rises behind the statues, the sky explodes in shades of orange and pink, creating one of the most photographed scenes in Polynesia. After the sunrise, explore Rano Raraku, the volcanic quarry where virtually all 887 moai were carved. Walk among nearly 400 statues in various stages of completion — some still embedded in the crater walls, others standing upright or toppled on the slopes. In the afternoon, relax at Anakena Beach, a stunning white coral sand beach fringed with palm trees. Here you will find Ahu Nau Nau with its exquisitely detailed moai and Ahu Ature Huki, the first moai re-erected by Thor Heyerdahl in 1956.

Day 4: Orongo Ceremonial Village & Rano Kau Crater

Drive to the southwestern tip of the island to Rano Kau, a massive volcanic crater filled with a freshwater lake covered in floating totora reeds. Perched on the crater rim is Orongo, the sacred ceremonial village of the Birdman cult. Explore the low-profile stone houses and petroglyphs depicting Tangata Manu (birdman figures), and learn about the annual competition where warriors would scale down the cliff to retrieve the first sooty tern egg of the season from Motu Nui islet. The winner’s patron became the island’s leader for the year. Visit the Ahu Vinapu archaeological site, famous for its precisely fitted stonework that resembles Inca masonry and has sparked theories of pre-Columbian contact with South America. End the day exploring the lava tube caves and dramatic coastal cliffs.

Day 5: Farewell Rapa Nui

Enjoy a leisurely final morning on Easter Island. Visit the Father Sebastian Englert Anthropological Museum if you haven’t already, browse the local craft market for Rapa Nui handicrafts including moai replicas carved from local stone, or take one last walk along the Hanga Roa waterfront. Transfer to Mataveri Airport for your afternoon flight back to Santiago, carrying memories of one of the world’s most mysterious and remote destinations.
