Slovenia: Hike, Bike & Raft — 7-Day Multi-Sport Alpine Adventure

Day 1: Arrival in Ljubljana — Welcome to Green Slovenia

Welcome to Slovenia — a country where you can hike alpine peaks in the morning, cycle through river valleys at midday, and raft crystal-clear rapids before sunset. Your Intrepid Travel adventure leader meets you at Ljubljana Airport for transfer to your hotel. After check-in, a welcome meeting covers the week’s multi-sport itinerary, safety briefing, and gear check. Your leader ensures everyone is equipped for hiking, cycling, and rafting — the three activities that form the backbone of this active adventure. The afternoon offers a short walking tour of Ljubljana’s compact Old Town, a beautifully preserved baroque city where pedestrian bridges span the willow-lined Ljubljanica River and outdoor cafes fill cobbled squares. The evening is free to explore Ljubljana’s acclaimed dining scene, perhaps sampling dishes from the Open Kitchen food market (Fridays in summer) or dining at one of the many riverside restaurants. Get a good night’s rest — the adventure begins in earnest tomorrow.

Overnight: Ljubljana (4-star hotel)

Meals: Welcome Drink

Day 2: Hike Vintgar Gorge & Lake Bled Discovery

Transfer to Bled after breakfast for a morning hiking through the magnificent Vintgar Gorge. This 1.6-kilometre canyon, carved through solid limestone by the turquoise Radovna River, features a remarkable wooden boardwalk system built in 1893 that takes you right through the heart of the gorge. Walk across bridges suspended above churning rapids, past deep green pools, and through narrow sections where the gorge walls close to within a few metres. The trail ends at the Sum Waterfall, a 13-metre cascade thundering into a deep pool. In the afternoon, experience Lake Bled from the water — take a traditional Pletna boat to the island church where you can ring the Wishing Bell. After exploring Bled Castle perched on its dramatic 130-metre cliff, walk the 6-kilometre lakeside path circling the entire lake. Reward yourself with Bled’s famous kremna rezina at the Park Hotel Cafe, where this vanilla-custard-and-puff-pastry delicacy has been baked daily since 1953. Overnight in Bled with views of the illuminated castle across the lake.

Day 3: Cycling the Radovljica River Valley

After breakfast, collect your fitted mountain bikes and helmets for a day of two-wheeled exploration through the idyllic Radovljica countryside. Known as the “Sweetest Town in Slovenia” for its beekeeping heritage, Radovljica is surrounded by gentle cycling routes along the Sava River and through traditional villages. The morning ride follows quiet country lanes past the magnificent 16th-century Radovljica Manor, home to the fascinating Museum of Apiculture — stop to learn about Slovenia’s deep-rooted beekeeping tradition and the uniquely Slovenian Carniolan honey bee. Continue cycling through the Lipnica Valley, a landscape of hay meadows, wooden hayracks (kozolci), and picture-perfect farm villages. Stop at a local gostilna for a traditional lunch before the afternoon loop along the Sava River cycling path, a flat, paved trail with scenic river views and the backdrop of the Karavanke mountain range. Total cycling distance: approximately 35-40 km (22-25 miles) with gentle elevation, suitable for all fitness levels. Return to Bled late afternoon. Optional: visit the Bled Adventure Park for zip-lining or the summer toboggan run on Straza Hill.

Overnight: Lake Bled

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Day 4: Lake Bohinj & Triglav National Park Hike

Today focuses on hiking in the pristine wilderness of Triglav National Park. A short morning transfer brings you to Lake Bohinj, Slovenia’s largest permanent lake, where you begin your hike into the Julian Alps. The trail climbs through mixed beech and pine forest, following the course of the Mostnica Stream. Pass traditional alpine dairy farms where farmers still practice centuries-old cheese-making traditions. Emerge above the treeline at Planina Blato (1,147m), a mountain pasture with wooden shepherds’ huts and jaw-dropping views of the central Julian Alps massif including Mount Triglav. After a picnic lunch with panoramic views, descend through the Voje Valley past the Devil’s Bridge natural stone arch and through the dramatic Mostnica Gorge with its sculpted limestone formations. The afternoon hike provides multiple perspectives of Lake Bohinj and the surrounding peaks. For those seeking an extra challenge, a longer loop past Crno Jezero (Black Lake) at 1,294m is available. Total hiking distance: 12-14 km (7.5-8.7 miles), ascent 550m, approximately 5-6 hours.

Overnight: Lake Bohinj

Meals: Breakfast, Packed Lunch

Day 5: Soca River Whitewater Rafting & Bovec

The ultimate adventure day. Depart Bohinj early, driving over the spectacular Vrsic Pass (1,611m) — Slovenia’s highest mountain road — with its 50 hairpin turns and breathtaking views spanning both sides of the Julian Alps. Stop at the pass summit and the Russian Chapel, built by POWs who constructed the road in 1916. Descend into the Soca Valley and arrive in Bovec, the undisputed capital of Slovenian adventure sports. After a safety briefing and gear distribution (wetsuit, helmet, life jacket), launch your raft onto the emerald waters of the Soca River. This 2.5-hour descent tackles Class 2-3 rapids through a spectacular gorge section — the river surges between polished limestone walls, offering a perfect mix of adrenaline-pumping whitewater and calmer stretches where you can admire the river’s legendary turquoise colour and even jump in for a swim in the (bracing!) alpine water. Professional river guides ensure safety while maximizing the thrill. After the rafting, check into your Bovec hotel and enjoy a well-earned dinner featuring local specialties like Bovec cheese, Soca trout, and craft beer from the region’s emerging brewery scene.

Overnight: Bovec

Meals: Breakfast, Dinner

Day 6: Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle & Lipica Stud Farm

A scenic morning drive from Bovec south through the Karst region to Postojna, Slovenia’s most popular natural attraction. Board the electric cave train for a journey through the 24-kilometre underground system — a subterranean world of stalactites, stalagmites, flowstone curtains, and massive chambers carved by the Pivka River over millions of years. Walk through the Spaghetti Hall with its ceiling forest of needle-thin stalactites and the vast Concert Hall that can accommodate 10,000 people. Next, visit Predjama Castle, the world’s largest cave fortress, dramatically embedded in a cliff face 123 metres above the valley floor. Explore the castle’s medieval chambers and learn the legend of the rebellious knight Erasmus. Continue to the Lipica Stud Farm, established in 1580, where the elegant white Lipizzaner stallions have been bred for over 440 years. Tour the historic stables and watch a dressage performance showcasing the horses’ intelligence and grace. A farewell dinner with your group celebrates the week’s adventures and achievements.

Overnight: Ljubljana

Meals: Breakfast, Farewell Dinner

Day 7: Ljubljana Farewell & Departure

Your final morning in Ljubljana is free for last-minute exploration. Browse the Central Market for edible souvenirs — pumpkin seed oil, local honey, dried Karst prosciutto, and Slovenian wines. Visit the Cathedral of St. Nicholas with its magnificent bronze doors, or take one last walk along the Ljubljanica River. Your adventure leader transfers you to Ljubljana Airport for your departure flight. In one extraordinary week, you have hiked through gorges and alpine meadows, cycled along river valleys, and rafted one of Europe’s most beautiful rivers, all framed by the stunning backdrop of the Julian Alps. You have discovered why Slovenia is the ultimate destination for active travelers — compact enough to traverse, diverse enough to amaze, and welcoming enough to feel like home.
