Day 1: Arrive Colombo — Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport. Transfer inland with a stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, home to the world’s largest captive herd of elephants. Day 2: Sigiriya Lion Rock & Evening Elephant Safari
Early morning climb of Sigiriya Lion Rock fortress. The 1,200-step ascent is rewarded with the famous frescoes and panoramic jungle views from the summit. Afternoon at leisure by the pool. Late afternoon jeep safari in Minneriya National Park for the ‘Elephant Gathering’—up to 300 wild elephants congregating around the ancient reservoir. Day 3: Polonnaruwa & Village Experience
Morning exploration of Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s 11th-century medieval capital. The Gal Vihara’s four colossal Buddha statues carved from living rock are a masterpiece of Sinhalese art. Afternoon village safari: bullock cart ride, catamaran across a village lake, traditional cooking demonstration, and a simple Sri Lankan meal in a mud-brick house. Overnight Sigiriya.
Day 4: Dambulla & Kandy
Morning at Dambulla’s UNESCO cave temple complex. Afternoon drive to Kandy, visiting a spice garden in Matale en route—Sri Lanka’s spices have driven global trade since the 16th century. Evening at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic during the puja (prayer ceremony), when the inner chamber opens to reveal the golden casket. Overnight Kandy.
Day 5: Kandy Culture & Peradeniya Gardens
Morning at the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya, 147 acres of tropical splendor including the famous Javan fig tree and the orchid house. Day 6: Scenic Train to Tea Country — Nuwara Eliya
One of the world’s most beautiful train journeys: the line from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya winds through misty tea plantations, eucalyptus forests, and waterfalls. Tea pluckers in bright saris dot the hillsides. Arrive at Nanu Oya station and transfer to Nuwara Eliya, 1,868 meters above sea level. Visit a working tea factory and learn the journey from leaf to cup. Afternoon walk through the ‘Little England’ of colonial bungalows and manicured gardens. Overnight Nuwara Eliya.
Day 7: Horton Plains & Drive to Udawalawe
Pre-dawn departure for Horton Plains National Park. The 9.5km circular nature trail leads through cloud forest and montane grasslands to World’s End—a sheer cliff with an 880-meter drop and views stretching to the southern coast. Look for sambar deer, purple-faced langurs, and endemic birds. After breakfast, the scenic drive descends through the southern hill country to Udawalawe. Overnight near Udawalawe National Park.
Day 8: Udawalawe National Park — Elephant Paradise
Full day in elephant country. Morning jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park, where the open grasslands, reservoir, and reliable elephant population (approximately 400 individuals) make sightings virtually guaranteed. Unlike Yala, where leopards are the star, Udawalawe is the elephant show—family groups with calves, lone bulls, and the remarkable sight of dozens of elephants spread across the landscape. Also look for water buffalo, crocodiles, and over 200 bird species. Afternoon visit to the Elephant Transit Home to watch orphaned elephant calves being bottle-fed—an encounter that supports vital wildlife rehabilitation work. Overnight near Udawalawe.
Day 9: Southern Coast & Galle Fort
Morning drive to the southern coast. Stop at a turtle hatchery to learn about sea turtle conservation (five of the world’s seven sea turtle species nest on Sri Lanka’s beaches). Visit the stilt fishermen at Koggala, then explore Galle Fort—walk the Dutch-built ramparts, browse boutiques in restored colonial buildings, and have lunch at a courtyard café. Afternoon at Unawatuna Beach for a swim in the Indian Ocean. Farewell dinner. Overnight Galle/Unawatuna.
Day 10: Departure
Morning at leisure on the beach. Transfer to Colombo Airport (2.5 hours via the Southern Expressway) for departure.
