Arrive in Libreville. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon exploration of the capital including the St. Michael’s Cathedral with its 31 carved wooden columns by a blind Gabonese artist—a remarkable piece of African Christian art. Welcome dinner and briefing. Overnight Libreville.
Day 2: The Trans-Gabon Railway to Lopé
Morning departure on the Trans-Gabon Railway, one of Africa’s great train journeys. The line cuts through 650 kilometers of rainforest, following the Ogooué River for much of the route. The train passes through villages accessible only by rail and dense forest where wildlife sightings from the window are possible. Arrive at Lopé station in the late afternoon. Transfer to Lopé Hotel, situated on the savannah-forest edge with spectacular views. Overnight Lopé Hotel.
Day 3: Mandrill Trekking — The Great Aggregation
Pre-dawn wake-up for the mandrill trek. Lopé’s mandrill troops are the largest in the world, with aggregations of 600-1,300 individuals recorded. The trackers use radio telemetry and years of field experience to locate the troop. The experience of finding them is extraordinary: first the distant sound of crashing vegetation, then glimpses of color—electric blue and scarlet faces—through the forest, then the realization that you’re surrounded by hundreds of the world’s most spectacularly colorful primates. Mandrills are shy animals that flee at the slightest alarm, so the encounter requires patience and absolute silence. Return to the hotel for a late breakfast and siesta. Day 4: Forest Clearings (Baïs) — The Rainforest Theater
Full day exploring Lopé’s forest clearings (baïs), natural openings in the rainforest where wildlife congregates at mineral-rich seeps. The main baï observation platform allows hours of uninterrupted wildlife watching: forest elephants emerge from the trees to dig for minerals, red river hogs root in the mud, and sitatunga antelopes pick their way through the papyrus. Buffalo graze at the clearing’s edge while hornbills fly overhead with their distinctive whooshing wingbeats. The patience of sitting at a baï is rewarded with encounters you’d never get on foot—animals behave completely naturally. Packed breakfast and lunch at the baï. Overnight Lopé Hotel.
Day 5: Gorilla Tracking & Second Mandrill Encounter
Morning tracking of western lowland gorillas in the forests of Lopé, where several groups have been habituated for research by the Max Planck Institute. The tracking can be strenuous through dense vegetation, but finding a silverback with his family—watching juveniles play while the females feed and the silverback keeps watch—is a profound wildlife experience. Afternoon second mandrill tracking opportunity, or alternatively, climb Mount Brazza (optional, strenuous) for panoramic views across the forest-savannah mosaic. Overnight Lopé Hotel.
Day 6: Petroglyphs & Return to Libreville
Morning visit to Lopé’s remarkable petroglyphs—ancient rock carvings scattered across the savannah, created by the region’s earliest human inhabitants. The carvings, pecked into exposed rock faces, depict geometric patterns, animals, and human figures, and are estimated to be between 2,000 and 4,000 years old. They represent one of Central Africa’s most important archaeological sites and provide a direct connection to the people who lived here when the savannah was much more extensive. Afternoon train back to Libreville, arriving in the evening. Farewell dinner. Overnight Libreville.

Morning at leisure. Transfer to the airport for departure.
