Day 2: Fly to Port-Gentil — Journey to Loango
Morning domestic flight to Port-Gentil, Gabon’s oil capital on the Atlantic coast. Transfer to the Loango National Park headquarters by 4×4 and boat, entering one of Africa’s most pristine protected areas. Loango encompasses 1,550 square kilometers of coastal savannah, mangrove swamps, rainforest, and wild beaches. Settle into Loango Lodge, your base for the next week. Day 3: Gorilla Tracking — Western Lowland Gorillas
The day you’ve been waiting for. Gabon is home to approximately 35,000 western lowland gorillas—the largest population in the world—and Loango’s habituated groups allow the most extraordinary primate encounters in Africa. Your morning begins before dawn, driving deep into the coastal forest with expert trackers who have spent years following these gorilla families. The tracking can take 2-4 hours through dense vegetation, but the reward is incomparable: sitting within meters of a silverback and his family as they feed, play, and interact naturally in the wild. The gorillas of Loango are not as thoroughly habituated as Rwanda’s mountain gorillas, which makes the encounter all the more thrilling and authentic. Afternoon recovery at the lodge. Day 4: Akaka Bush Camp — Into the Deep Forest
Morning boat transfer to Akaka Bush Camp, a remote camp deep in the forest along a winding river. The journey itself is a wildlife safari—the boat glides past elephants drinking at the water’s edge, sitatunga antelopes in the papyrus, and an astonishing variety of birds including Goliath herons and African fish eagles. Settle into your tented accommodation on raised platforms. Afternoon forest walk with pygmy trackers who demonstrate their extraordinary knowledge of the forest’s medicinal plants and wildlife signs. Day 5: Forest Elephants & Surfing Hippos
Full day exploring Loango’s unique coastal ecosystem. Morning forest walk tracking forest elephants—smaller, more elusive, and genetically distinct from their savannah cousins. The trackers read the forest like a book, pointing out fresh tracks, feeding signs, and the subtle sounds that signal elephants nearby. Afternoon on the beach: Loango is famous for its ‘surfing hippos’—hippopotamuses that venture into the Atlantic surf, a behavior documented nowhere else. With luck, you’ll see forest elephants walking on the beach, and perhaps a crocodile sunning near the waves—a scene that defies every expectation of African wildlife. Sunset beach walk. Day 6: Second Gorilla Tracking — A Different Family Group
Return to Loango Lodge. Morning tracking of a different habituated gorilla group, providing the opportunity to observe different family dynamics and perhaps a silverback you haven’t yet met. Each gorilla tracking experience is completely different—you might witness juveniles play-fighting, a mother nursing her infant, or the silverback performing a dramatic chest-beating display. Day 7: Mangrove Safari & Turtle Beaches
Morning boat safari through Loango’s extensive mangrove system—a nursery for marine life and home to the red-capped mangabey, a monkey species found only in this region. The mangroves are eerily beautiful, with roots forming cathedral-like arches over dark water. Afternoon visit to Pointe Denis or the turtle-nesting beaches—four species of marine turtle (leatherback, green, hawksbill, and olive ridley) nest on Gabon’s coast, with nesting season peaking November-February. Day 8: Cultural Encounter — Mpivié or Fernan Vaz Village
Day trip to a local community on the edge of the park. Meet the people who have lived alongside Loango’s wildlife for generations, learning about traditional fishing techniques, forest gathering, and the complex relationship between conservation and community livelihoods.
