Day 1: Arrive Yap — Stone Money Island
Touch down on Yap — one of the most traditional islands in the Pacific. Women still wear lava-lava skirts with bare-breasted tradition if they choose; men wear thu, the traditional loincloth. Transfer to your hotel. Afternoon orientation: visit the Yap Living History Museum to understand the island’s unique culture, including the famous rai — massive stone discs used as currency. Walk through Colonia, Yap’s tiny capital. Overnight Colonia.
Day 2: Stone Money Banks & Traditional Villages
Full-day cultural exploration. Morning: visit the legendary Stone Money Banks — paths lined with enormous rai discs up to 4m in diameter, some quarried in Palau 450km away and transported by ocean-going canoes. Learn how ownership is tracked through oral history — the stones don’t move, but ownership transfers through agreement. Visit a traditional faluw (men’s house) — impressive wooden structures built entirely without nails using traditional techniques. Afternoon: visit remote villages in the interior where traditional Yapese life continues largely unchanged. See traditional weaving of lavalava, watch canoe building, and interact with village elders. Overnight Colonia.
Day 3: Manta Rays & Marine Wonder
Full-day on the water. Yap is one of the world’s best manta ray destinations, with resident populations in Mi’il and Goofnuw channels. Morning: snorkel or dive in the channels where manta rays with 4m wingspans glide past performing cleaning rituals. Unlike mantas elsewhere, Yap’s mantas are present year-round. Afternoon: explore Yap’s outer reef — pristine coral gardens with turtles, reef sharks, and incredible fish diversity. Visit a remote beach on an uninhabited islet. Overnight Colonia.
Day 4: Stone Paths & Navigation Lore
Morning visit to the ancient stone paths that crisscross Yap — hundreds of kilometers of stone-paved trails built by ancestors for foot travel and communication. Walk sections of these remarkable pathways. Visit the village of Balabat to see traditional Yapese dancing — the standing dance involving intricate bamboo stick movements. Afternoon: learn about traditional Pacific navigation from a local navigator. See a proa — the asymmetrical sailing canoe that Micronesian navigators used to discover islands across thousands of kilometers of open ocean using stars, waves, and birds. Overnight Colonia.
Day 5: Final Traditions & Departure
Morning at the Colonia market for last souvenirs: traditional baskets, shell jewelry, and miniature stone money. Visit the Yap Art Studio for contemporary Yapese art. Transfer to airport for departure.
